Mack Ade – AM Report – 8-9-13 – Matt Bowman, Starters

avatar - nyc 1

I listened to TC the last three days... three days ago he was all over Zack Wheeler...  yesterday he made a comment about "somebody" who thinks throwing six innings and out is a good outing, and yesterday, after the Gee outing he said you can always count on Gee being there in the seventh inning.  It sure sounds like to me that Collins has the rag on for Wheeler right now...

Mark Simon    @msimonespn      -  The Tigers have scored 142 runs in Max Scherzer's 23 starts The Mets have scored 90 runs in Matt Harvey's 23 starts

Rich MacLeod ‏@richmacleod  - The Mets current rotation ERAs... Mejia: 1.96, Harvey: 2.09, Wheeler: 3.73, Gee: 3.82, Hefner: 4.11 (as a starter).

Dustin Salyer  on Matt Harvey -

Clutch Performers Matt Harvey will just not go away. Another dominate  performance against the Rockies last night, Matt Harvey finished with a  complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out six. He has  been a top-three pitcher all season long, and with this clutch performance, is  showing no signs of slowing down

Guy Curtright on Matt Bowman

Princeton University is known for academics, not baseball. But the Ivy League school has produced 25 Major League players in its long and prestigious history. St. Lucie Mets starter Matt Bowman would like to make it 26. To do so, though, he'd have to break the Princeton baseball mold. Only five of the Major Leaguers have played since World War II. Four of them, like Bowman, pitched right-handed. That, however, is the only physical similarity. - http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130807&content_id=56046272&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_milb&sid=milb

There’s simply too much decent pitching in the Mets system to cover everybody in this feature. I’m going to break out the guys in AAA and AA that have a chance to pitch someday in the major leagues and let the others below those two levels spend another year determining their future. I will say this… the potential major league pitching talent goes as far as the GCL and DSL system. This team is stacked deep in rotational talent.

The guys we do need to talk about, based on projection and talent are who I have as the six starters that will begin the 2014 season in Las Vegas:

Noah Syndergaard – It sure looks like that Syndergaard is going to be the bomb, as well as the fourth member of the ‘Dream Rotation’ this team seems to be building (Matt Harvey, Zack Wheeler, Jon Niese, Jenrry Mejia). There’s no reason to break out stats here because you all know them already. I expect him to finish the season with Binghamton and then come to camp as the SP1 for Las Vegas. You won’t see him in Queens until around July (yeah, it’s that ‘Super Two’ thingy again), the same time as the Mets next top pitching prospect (Rafael Montero) will be ready to head to Queens to.

Rafael Montero – Montero completes the puzzle (if he’s still around). You now have the Mets ‘dream rotation’ of Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Mejia, Syndergaard, and… err… wait a minute, there are six of them. There might be some need to shut both these two guys down early, but the Mets are not going to operate out of the 2014 box with a six-man rotation. One of these six have to go and I can tell you by experience that it is always easier to trade someone that already has major league experience than someone just coming up from the minors (also, teams tend to frown on people with TJS history). One last thought… there are people in the Mets camp that think Montero would be best placed in the back end of the bullpen.

Jake deGrom – We’re now entering the secondary level of starters that have no place to go in this organization other than Las Vegas or the Mets pen. As you know, no one pitches very well in Vegas, but, in nine starts, deGrom could have pitched a lot worse (4.53). His 19 starts for St. Lucie and Savannah in 2012 are still the highlight of his career (9-3, 2.43), and it did seem like he was pushed pretty quickly to AAA, but deGrom is a big boy at 25-years old and has held up well pitching for three teams this year (AAA/AA/A+: 6-7, 4.51, 21-starts). I don’t think he’s ready for a pen move yet. I see him back in Las Vegas as the SP3 come next spring.

Logan Verrett – Verrett is having a very good season in Binghamton (20-starts, 10-6, 4.13, 1.10, 126.1-IP, 111-K, only 26-BB) and currently is second in the organization in victories. A lot has o happen to this team for him to someday become part of the Mets rotation, but no one has to deal with that for another year. Verrett, like the rest of the guys listed here, will pitch in the Vegas rotation in 2014

Darin Gorski – None of us are ever going to forgive Gorski for his 2011 season with St. Lucie (11-3, 2.08). I remember him in Savannah the year before and I have to tell you he was pretty meh (6-8, 4.58). His fastball barely hit 90 and I don’t remember anything standing out.It turns out that he worked hard during the 2010-2011 off-season on his delivery mechanics which helped translate into the dominate A+ results. The fastball still sits around 88-91, but does hit 93-94. He has pitched this year for both Binghamton (9 games, 8 starts, 3-1, 2.08) and now Las Vegas (4 games, 3 starts, 1-1, 6.59). The Mets did discuss turning him into a LOOGY for the 2013 season, but it never happened. It may still, but it looks like he’ll come back to the Vegas rotation next season.

Erik Goeddel – Here’s the wild card. No one ever talks about Erik Goeddel. Goeddel has a 4-year minor league stat line of: 17-16, 3.40, 1.31, 299.0-IP, 276-K, 116-BB. He;s never finished a college or professional season with an ERA over four. And, he’s done this at four different professional levels. This year, for Binghamton he’s: 9-5, 3.55, 111.2-IP, 108-K. And yet, he’s never spoken as being prt of the future of this team. Sort of Dillon Gee v2.0. What a perfect guy to package in a 3-4 man deal for Tulo…

  1. I probably should save this for the Sunday War Room, Mack, but if for the same price (whatever that is) you could get EITHER Tulo or Cargo, who would you take?

  2. Shortstops capable of winning Gold Gloves and Silver Slugger awards don't grow on trees. Best overall shortstop skill wise since Seattle ARod

  4. Good question Hobie....personally I would take Cargo, but I wouldn't be disappointed either way. Tulo would fill a huge hole for us at SS and LF'ers are easy to find than top hitting shortstops, but I think Cargo is a better overall player. I'd be interested to see what everyone else has to say as well.

  5. I think it's time to call up Nimmo and Ceccini, both had 3 hit days yesterday

  6. I'd like to finish off the infield defensively first- Tulo

  7. Scott, cute idea, but the problem with that is they are hitting against pitchers years away from being ready... you're going to have to wait for both of them for 3 more years... or either longer/never

  8. I think Scott was being facetious. Wonder why he's not urging the call-up of Hicks. He had 3 hits yesterday too . . 2 HR's and a 2B. Throw dD in the mix too, why dontcha?

  9. This.

The Mets can find other OF but a SS who is great defensively and can hit cleanup is gold.

  10. No doubt Tulo is tremendous when he plays, but the guy is always hurt and no a youngster any more. I'd also be curious to know Colorado's price tag for him vs. Cargo...I'd imagine Thor would be on each list, but the price tag in prospects would also be a factor.

  11. why does everyone keep saying he's hurt "all the time"?

and... he's 2 years younger than David Wright

why in God's name would a fan of this team not want a guy like this on SS being paid by someone other than themselves

I have such a hard time understanding the logic of fans sometimes

  12. Tulo is a better fit for this team then any other player. Period.

  13. Tulo is signed until he's 35. Lets not talk about him like he's ancient. He and Wright together would be cornerstones on the left side of the infield and in the middle of the order.

As time goes by, if they slow down either could be rotated to 1B and Tulo could shift to 3B and Wright to 1B. But why worry about that? Tulo is a premiere player and shows no signs of slowing.

I get the feeling that some fans would find fault with ANY potential acquisition. Getting Tulo would be a monster coup for this team. All of a sudden you'd have Wright, Tulo, and d'Arnaud as core pieces with Flores and Davis as potential core pieces.

I would try to exclude Thor from a trade and try and sell the Rox on a Mejia-Gee pairing as the foundation of a deal. Mejia has TOR upside and Gee has a 2.53 ERA over his last 13 starts. Both have major league experience and I would push that angle.

  14. You'd have to pick Tulo, unless they demand too much. They'll demand too much.

    ReplyDelete
  15. There's no way they trade Tulo AND throw in money. If you get Tulo, you get his contract. Also, say goodbye to your best two prospects, minimum.

    ReplyDelete
  16. They'll ask for Wheeler, then.

You don't get Cargo or Tulo without parting with Wheeler or Syndergaard. Just not happening.

The only way I could see a coup like that is if we also give up Nimmo, Montero, Plawecki, Cessa, Puello in a Santana-like deal. It could happen..I just don't see it.

  17. 7-for-1? Get real.

I remember talk that Upton would cost top prospects in baseball and then went for far less.

If the Rockies are motivated to trade him it'll be for salary relief. Only a number of teams can afford him, have enough of a need at SS, and have talent to deal. If Colorado is going for a rebuild, they're better off trading for 4 players than Zach Wheeler and garbage.

  18. always fun throwing around trade scenarios I'm on board with the Tulo deal but don't know who I'd rather keep between Thor and Wheeler. How awesome is it that after 4 miserable years at Citi-field we finally have some real talent and excitement and it's August...wow! Also the most surprising and important development this season has to be Mejia's return from the abyss. Remember he WAS Matt Harvey a few years ago and his return can only mean good things for us and more flexibility regarding a Tulo trade.

  19. Seriously Gary. Harvey, Syndergaard, Wheeler, Mejia, Niese, Gee, Montero....it's a good spot to be in, and doesn't even take into account some of the younger arms like Fulmer and Matz.

  20. Somebody needs to come up with a subject for 'The War Room'.

    Mine was Tulo...
