1) Mack would be my GM and Reese Kaplan my Asst GM.
2) Gerrit Cole would replace Zack Wheeler
3) Get the best two remaining relievers on the market
4) Determine if Cespedes will be healthy and assess his status. Sell him to an AL team, and replace him with a CF, or keep him, see how it works out for a while, and dump him at All Star break if not working out.
5) Get a real back up catcher that can function as a # 1 if Ramos gets hurt.
1. Give BVW an actual budget to operate with in 2020 and beyond. I am not talking about Dodgers' money, but there shouldn't be any worries about the luxury tax (especially with the money coming off the books in 2021). Remember, we had a winning record against the Nationals in 2019, so we aren't that far away, IMO.
2. With said money, I would suggest to BVW that Anthony Rendon would make an excellent addition to the infield and the lineup. The uptick in marketing revenue, along with tickets sold would likely cover most, if not all of his salary.
3. I would also suggest working on extensions for players like Syndergaard, Conforto, Stroman, Alonso, McNeil, etc. Probably not all of them would bite, but keep the core together the best that you can so you are augmenting the team and not replacing talent each year.
4. I would buy out Cespedes! He may or may not play again and if he does, he is a DH. No one is going to trade for him and his presence on the roster is counterproductive. Buying him out would show the fanbase that the new owner is not a penny pincher and trying to win comes first.
5. It is already underway, but I would continue to suggest to my GM that good teams also build from within so a continued emphasis on the Draft and International markets is a good thing. Couple that with an emphasis on player development in the minor leagues (i.e. DEFENSE) and we are off and running.
Bonus answer.......tell MLB to pound sand and keep the minor league structure as it is.
This year, easy Pay 50 pct of cano contract to get rid of thin (I would fire Brody for that move too.... no one takes that much money and give up a prospect like kelenic ... idiot)
No cano means McNeill at 2 base and thus we sign rendon 6/210mil
Trade Rosario Peterson and d Smith for Lindor and sign him for 6 years
(Infields done) and defense improved exponentially
Sign Strasburg
Trade thor to the padres for 3 of their top 5 prospects (2 of the pitchers)
Sign wheeler but make matz a closer (hopefully he become Andrew Miller)
If indeed money is no object, then securing the rights to Rendon, Cole, Betances and at least one more quality reliever FA would come first.
While it's possible there is some regression as people adjust to him, securing the long term deal for Pete Alonso is indeed a smart move.
I would approach a team in desperate need of some star power and offer paid-down contracts of Cano, Cespedes and perhaps Lowrie. Replenish the upper level of the farm with the return.
I would tell Jeff McNeil he is the second baseman at least until Gimenez/Mauricio get here. Regardless of where he plays, he is a hard nosed gamer and should be extended as well.
I'm not yet on the fire BVW bandwagon as no one would have said "boo" had Edwin Diaz performed as he did in 2018. They might even have let the slow start of Cano slide. If I was on the fire BVW bandwagon, it would be with a poster of Carlos Beltran on my protest sign.
BTW, I would inform Beltran he can stick around as a coach, but he will not be the guy in charge. Replace him with Tim Bogar. Just as there's no replacement for displacement, there's nothing that replaces experience (even if it's at the minor league level).
Hey...how come everyone's plan is better than mine - except for not making Mack the GM, of course, that was brilliant on my part. Eddie from Corona as co-asst. GM.

I think I could live with this team
1. I would send Cespedes a check for the full money due... then I would release him.
ReplyDelete2. I would do the same with what is owed David Wright
3. I have to respect the GM so I... nan. Screw te respect... I would throw enough silly money to sign 3B Anthony Rendon
4. I would do the same with Cole
5. I would extend Pete through 2029
Forgot one...
ReplyDeleteMake #3 a full payout and release of Cano
Change 4 to acquire Rendon
Change 5 to Cole
Not a financial move but I would put a rule in place that we never again acquire a player who will be 34 or older during the season he is acquired
ReplyDeleteI am done with the old guard.

Wow
ReplyDeleteI forgot Lowrie.
Make #1-4 pay/dump Cespedes Wright Cano and Lowrie
Extend Pete at #5
