The other day Tony
Plate talked about the possibility that Tim Tebow may be selected off the Mets in
the Rule 5 Draft this coming winter.
That made me wonder who beside Tim
Tebow will be Rule 5 eligible this winter.
With no minor league games extremely possible this year, it may
be very difficult for teams to evaluate which players they should keep and who
they may want to draft from other teams.
Even with 40-man roster spots being created up with the potential
free agency of Marcus
Stroman, Wilson
Ramos, Rick
Porcello, and Michael
Wacha, there will not be a lot enough room to carry all of these players.
First, I think LHP David
Peterson will surely be protected. The
Mets first round pick in 2017 (20th overall) impressed this spring
coming off a 0-1 3.46, mark over 4 starts and 13 innings in Arizona last fall.
Next, I think the Mets will want to take a hard look at two
of their top catching prospects: Andres
Regnault and Wilfred
Astudillo.
At 21, Andres
has a 29.9% caught stealing rate in his career, .292/.328/.489 (.817 OPS) last
year in Kingsport.
Wilfred
Astudillo, 20, 77 games and 651.2 innings with 37.5% caught stealing in his
career, .267/.323/.408 (.731 OPS) last year in Kingsport.
I am pulling for three of my favorite minor league players, Wilmer
Reyes who slashed .333/.350/.441 with 5 HR; 33 RBI; 12 steals in 61 games for
Brooklyn last year. His .791 OPS was one
of the highest in the Mets system last year.
Also, Jose
Peroza in 49 2019 games he drove in 42 runs, 10 HR, 10 doubles, with a
.263 BA, .330 OBP, .514 SLG. At 19, Jose
has three professional seasons behind him as compared to Brett Baty who just
started his professional career.
Plus Ranfy
Adon
who showed speed and power in Brooklyn last year and over the winter was named
the fastest Met player in their minor league system.

The Rule 5 draft is usually not a big loser for teams, as guys with future promise, but who are not nearly major league ready won't get selected, because as I understand it, teams selecting a guy have to then keep him on the major league roster all year won't pick a not-ready guy, unless of course, he has a huge ceiling.
ReplyDeleteSo, a Jose Peroza may be good as a major leaguer someday, but a team won't pick him now, because he is at least a few years away, even as young as he is. Also, I am not sure if Peroza will have been around long enough to be eligible for the draft this December.
My guess is since the Mets' minors system is ranked low, and if not for a few guys like Mauricio and Allen would be really low, that they have little to worry about when the Rule 5 draft arrives in December.
Tom,
ReplyDeleteJose Peroza signed as a 16 year old in 2016. His 2020 season would be his 5th year with the team and hence his is Rule 5 eligible. That is the danger of signing Dominican Players so young. Too bad he did not get the chance to play minor league ball this year. Source: FANGRAPHS: https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jose-peroza/sa3003288/stats?position=3B
But you are probably correct, like you were last year, unless a team is willing to carry a player the entire year, there is not a big chance of losing players.
Wish the Mets had gone for other teams eligible outfielders to shore up that position in the minors. This would have been the perfect year for keeping players on the roster all year without having to worry about them actually playing.
Yep, John, every team has its Jose Perozas. They only worry about protecting them when there is significant risk they could be drafted and they really don't want to lose them.
ReplyDeleteYou kind of work backwards with your AAA players and then your AA. Anyone in AA being promoted for a year to the majors by another team is unlikely. Below that it's nearly impossible. For the Mets, they are fortunate in that most of their upper level players are not all that desirable, so there's not much they need to do in order to protect the few that are.
ReplyDeleteHave we ever signed someone in one of these drafts that went on to me an all-star?
ReplyDeleteDid we lose one in the same way?
I thought Darren O'Day was a great Rule 5 pickup.
ReplyDeleteOh, wait...
Roberto Clemente, Johan Santana, and George Bell are the Rule 5 best.
ReplyDeleteNot by us, right?
ReplyDeleteNot in this dimension. Biggest loss was the defensive catcher that Washington took from us.
