Some guys, I just write off. For one reason or another. Too many Ks. Too low an OBP. Too little pop. Can’t field a lick. Or some combo of the 4.
Fortunately, some of those guys don’t give me no mind. They just strive to get better.
Take for instance, Luke Ritter, who I had frankly written off before, as someone with decent power but oodles of strikeouts. Why?
In 2022, he hit .204, including just .160 over 26 AAA games. Considering he was almost 26 when 2022 ended, things to me for him looked bleak, and 165 Ks in 124 games last year was a show-stopper. Not a stolen base threat, either.
But the past is the past…he continued to play. Believed in himself.
So, how is Luke doing this year?
Well, let’s look and find out, shall we?
As it turns out, if I had a quiz question for you, as to who has a higher 2023 on base percentage, Ronnie Mauricio, Jeff, McNeil, Brandon Nimmo, or Luke Ritter, who wins that foursome competition?
Well, the answer is obvious – Luke Ritter, at .384.
Ritter, through Thursday, had been up 333 times in AA and AAA, with a quite notable 23 HRs and 56 RBIs, while hitting .249, and has hit .257 over an extended number of AAA games, while maintaining a .381 OBP there. And much higher than .257 the past few months.
His K rate has dropped, too, with “just” 63 in 55 AAA games. Well, 63 in 226 plate appearances is still too high, but clearly trending better. His. OBP and slug %’s are up a whopping 73 points and 128 points, respectively, this year.
Best of all, he has surged in June, July, and August, after a lousy April and May. (Well, not completely lousy…despite a .200 average those two months, he also got on base 37 times in 41 games via walk or HBP).
A solid .285 with 15 HRs in 57 games after May. Impressive.
Defense is GOOD and versatile.
Six errors in the field this year in 97 games, mostly at 2B, 3B, and 1B. Pretty darned good.
Some OF experience, too, though mostly in college. No catching.
.261/.452/.594 vs. lefties in 2023 indicates a hitting v. lefties specialist may be in the budding.
Keep it up, Luke. You’re not there yet, I suspect, but I had you wrong.
You’re closer.
FYI - 7th rounder in 2019 who, like every other minor leaguer perceived as getting older, aging out, had his development slowed by cancelled 2020.
So, while he’s 26 - don’t write him off like I did. He might be ready at 27 to play for a rebuilding Mets team to play some sort of a role, perhaps as a utility man with pop.
METS DEBACLE:
3 games vs. Atlanta. If not for a single swing, a 3 run HR by Vogelbach, they were outscored 34-0. 1962 was better than this.
I have a few more drafted articles teed up that will run over the next 10 days. If they’re taking off the rest of the season, I will too. It’ll be another lost Mets decade, let’s not kid ourselves. I just recently retired, time to shift my focus onto more productive things.
Before I go today, in the minors, one Mets minors team surrendered 20 runs, 2 gave up 10, and 1 coughed up 8. Good grief.
Christian Scott and a pitcher named Thomas combined for a AA one hitter, a ray of sun in a solar eclipse. The sun won’t come out tomorrow in Metsville.
A little more sunshine. The FCL Mets are in first place and the Brooklyn Cyclones are in first place in the second half.
ReplyDeleteAnother ray...
ReplyDeleteBecause the Tigers lost and the Mets shit the bed twice...
If the season ended last night...
The Mets would qualify for the last lottery pick at 1.6
They are also only 1/2 game behind the Cards for 1.5
Ritter is nice
ReplyDeleteCute little town around 30 miles from where I live
Oh
You mean LUKE Ritter
Nice minor league bat. Good defense. Could have future as utility player because he also plays first
Not as cute as the town
When Ritter vies for the utility job, he may find that Three’s Company.
ReplyDeleteHe’s the kind of guy you wish they had a weekend series rule for. You may not otherwise make the big leagues, but we’ll waive all roster limits etc. and let you call up 4 guys in September, each for a weekend series, as a thanks for trying cameo.
Raw, I hear you, but so many things can derail guys from low minors to high minors, and most are 2-3 years off. I’ll see in the off season what they do. Most things they do don’t work. Allan Winans was not protected in the Minor League Portion of the Rule 5 draft, and kicked the crap out of the Mets yesterday FOR THE BRAVES. Just another egregious example.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on the future outfield of the Mets
ReplyDelete2024
Nimmo, McNeil, and Marte are the incumbents
New candidates for UT OF include Lorenzo Cedrola Carlos Cortes Matt Rudick
2025
The lumber arrives
Drew Gilbert
Luisangel Acuna
Ryan Clifford
2026
Wilfred Lara
2027
Willy Fanas
Simon Juan
2028
Anthony Baptist
BUST
Alex Ramirez
THE FUTURE OF THE OUTFIELD IS BRIGHT
How about Morabito? 2026 maybe.
DeleteIf Alex Ramirez is a future bust
DeleteWe need to trade him now while he is still viewed as a top 100 consideration prospect… as I have always viewed 2 things
1 Mets need to be the best at scouting thier own players and evaluating who really is keeper and who we should maximize value as a trade chip when thier value is the highest. (We got endy Rodriguez wrong as a example)
2 trade too soon over trade too late… I don’t care about players retiring a life long met… it means you kept them too long for me…
Eddie
Hopefully, Gilbert, Acuna, and Clifford are the next Nimmo,/Lindor/Conforto-caliber players for this team. Ultra-cheap, will help them make other maneuvers. Question is, will Ronny Mauricio join OF in 2024?
ReplyDeleteI don't think so
DeleteI think his future is on second with Acuna in center
But don’t the Me,Mets get put down 10 spots because they are way over in pay role?
ReplyDeleteNot if they qualify for one of the first 6.picks
DeleteThey are protected from the penalties
Question is will they bring up anyone good or keep playing for the lottery pick? Also is Pete a Met next year?
ReplyDeleteBring up someone that is good?
DeleteGary there are no one other than Baty and Mauricio that are considered AAA good and they seem committed to retraining there
It's interesting that you bring up Alonso
DeleteThere is chatter out there that he is one of the toxic people in the clubhouse
Cohen will remove all that venom in the.off season be it players coaches or managers
Pete would bring a haul in a trade or at least.one top starter
And Vientos is an affordable gamer that could someday produce 80 per cent of Alonso numbrrs
Mack, I would entertain returning Baty Sept 1, and possibly R Mo. Latter may not be ready, but a little break-in in a losing 2023 might pay dividends in 2024.
ReplyDeleteHave no doubt these two will be called up in September.
ReplyDeleteYou both might be right but I really wish for the Mets to keep concentrating on the lottery pick
ReplyDeleteAt the rate we are going, the challenge may be to avoid 100 losses.
ReplyDeleteIt will be very interesting to watch how Cohen handles this team in the future
DeleteHedge fund managers sell things off and don't attempt to rebuild
That being said this is his legacy and currently is his folly
Top 4 Mets minors teams are 189-242. Below them, FCL Mets are 27-17 but negative 10 in net runs scored. Facts. Not pretty.
ReplyDeleteCohen didn’t hedge his Mets bets enough.
ReplyDeleteVientos? 80% of Alonso production? Nonsense!
ReplyDeleteRamirez a bust? He’s 20 years old!! Another what have you done for me lately opinions.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for.talking with me today.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed Sunday
Gary
ReplyDeleteThere really seems to be an attitude problem here.
Guess we'll see
Vasil making another positive statement for Syracuse today
ReplyDeleteI don’t think the Mets can get a lottery pick. Because they have the highest payroll their draft pick is pushed back ten spots. Check it out.
