SAVAGE VIEWS – MANAGER OF THE YEAR 2025

SAVAGE VIEWS – MANAGER OF THE YEAR 2025

With a 20-9 record after 29 games, Carlos Mendoza has to be the overwhelming favorite to claim manager of the year for 2025.

As a matter of fact, I thought he deserved the award last year. It’s a good feeling knowing that he is likely to be around for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, some of his recent and not so recent decisions confound me.

·       Last Friday the Mets had a one run lead going into the ninth inning. Stanek is brought into the game to close and Acuna takes over for McNeil. Oh, wait a minute, McNeil is left in the game and does not make the play to end the frame.

·       An ongoing issue is the lack of length provided by our starting pitching. Clay Holmes gets pulled after five innings and 70 pitches; Canning is not allowed to pitch the sixth today; Megill gets pulled after giving up his second hit {I don’t count the fly ball Soto did not catch). Mendoza needs to learn that not every pitcher is tired after 100 pitches. Asking the pen to get 12 outs every game is not sustainable. Thirty games into the season and the pen is showing signs of being overused.

·       Bringing Stanek into the game on Sunday in another save opportunity produced predicable results. Diaz is capable of pitching two days in a row.

·       I’m surprised that either Winker or McNeil did not hit for Marte with runners on second and third and one out. As it turns out Marte hit the ball hard and the shortstop made a nice play to record the second out. A better baserunner that Soto would have scored standing up on the play.

·       Nimmo tied a Mets record for most RBI’s in a game. I still don’t like him in the cleanup spot. He is not the clutch hitter you want up when the game is on the line.

·       Vientos is one of my favorite players but I wonder if he would benefit from some time in Syracuse. His early season struggles are a concern.

·       Why the hesitation to give Acuna a shot in CF. Clearly Taylor and Seri are not the answer. Perhaps it’s time to give Drew Gilbert a chance. Let’s find Marte a home and DFA Seri.

·       Hope we never see Jose Urena in a Mets uniform ever again.

I’m thinking that once the M&M boys return in about a month that Canning would be prime trade material. Perhaps to the Orioles.

  1. Ray,
I could be wrong, but I think Vientos is out of options and could not be sent to Syracuse.

  2. I've been asking the Acuna question for a while now. Must not be very good if they are rushing Mcneil into the position.

Agreed about Siri and Marte. Taylor is a good 5th OF...no more.
I'm beginning to feel that Gilbert is just not good enough. This kid is really blowing a great opportunity.

  3. Disagree on Vientos, Ray. He is really coming around. I think a lot was his aversion to cold weather. I think he would have worn a winter parka n the field if they'd let him. Last 15 games, .286 with 13 RBIs. Can't argue with that.

Pitchers need to go deeper, I agree, and Urena got his save and can take it back with him to Syracuse. One of the ugliest saves ever.

I still think Marte has something left in the tank.

Soto isn't very fast. His glove is not as good as Siri's. But Siri is in the bottom one percentile of MLB hitters, while Soto is in the 99th percentile.

  4. Joe, I think it is that they were afraid to start the inning that if the Nats tied it, they'd want McNeil's bat in the line up to rebound. Sadly, Jeff should have dived for the ball and then it would have been 1st and 2nd, 2 outs and maybe they escape the inning tied. Maybe the ball looked fieldable to Jeffy, but the bounce stayed lower than he expected.

I prefer to look at the ball Soto lost in the sun that opened the floodgates Sunday. Don't today's Sunglasses prevent that from happening? And it is a park Soto is extremely familiar with. SMH. I am increasingly fond of LA Acuna. who is now a career .295 hitter in 105 ABs.

  5. With his speed, Acuna is a better utility guy than Luis Guillorme used to be. Acuna could be our new Wally Backman.

    1. I would love to see him use the drag bunt Backman utilized so well to set the table for hitters behind him. It seems at times to be a lost art.

  6. Tom, we have to face facts, Soto is just a horrible OF. He will never improve. He takes wrong routes, and is afraid of the wall.
He has to transition to DH sooner than later. He can put all his concentration into hitting.

Acuna has earned a place on the team. Really should get him some OF experience.

Right now, we are fielding the worst defensive OF in baseball

    Nimmo, weakest arm
    Soto, horrible
McNeil, out of position. And he's by far the best. Glad to see the bat coming back.

    3. you have to be nuts to send V down

    4. If the MOY awards show was 9 hours long, someone needs to take Mendy out after 5

  8. Mark Vientos has a six-game hitting streak.

.375/.429/1.054 with a 2B, 3B, HR, 8 RBI and 6 runs scored during that span.

    Last 13 games: .320/.364/.600, 16 hits, 3 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 13 RBI, 11 runs scored.

  9. We can totally move Siri to the 60 day DL and get him off the 40. that opens up a spot on the 40 man. I think we'll be watching gilbert very closely.

I think we'll see more starters finishing the 6th inning in May. I think this was a very methodical and deliberate approach for better or worse with them in April.

I hope Minter can come back soonish (but not rushed!).

Swaggy V is coming around. The bats in general are perking up across the entire lineup and performing well as a group the last few days.

Time to see how we perform against a winning team tonight! go Mets!

    1. My guess is the next up will be Mauricio around May 21st

      McNeil will settle into center

Mauricio could push Vientos to DH

      Wonderful problem

  10. How about moving Siri to the DFA list.

Swaggy V is a new one. You can't get cocky until you prove it the second time around. At least.

I hear they are going to bring up Wadell to pitch the 2nd game of the series. Maybe he can stick around as a lefty in the bullpen until Minter returns.

  11. Mack, I was disturbed to see Mauricio steal a base in his first game back, unless they’ve told him the chance of reinsuring the knee is highly remote. Why do it? Your goal is to get back to the majors, and health is essential.

Let’s see him rake like a man possessed at the plate.
