Good morning…
I'm
filling in for Angry this morning who's off on special assignment.
Obviously,
we are going to keep close check on the Greene (Cincinnati) vs. Skenes match,
but, to me, Wednesday is the night that Jonah
Tong has to prove to
everyone that he belongs to be here.
The Pirates wasted little time, taking a 2-0 lead in the sixth. They pulled Skenes with 85 pitches after six, with the same lead. Fuck Tyler Stephenson who tied it in the ninth
So. Are you happy Tyrone Taylor was back in center? Tong really struggled in the first inning, but settled down and had a commanding second. Sadly, that didn't hold in the third.
Simply put, Tong couldn't get a single out in the third, and if that wasn't embarrassing enough, he was pulled for Dicky Lovelady (9.31-ERA).
No. I'm not mentioning the Vientos throw.
No. I'm not mentioning the Alonso scoop
And no, Holmes is... ah, turning this off at 2-8 and Pirates-Reds tied.
Let's see if this works again.
....
Oka, it's Thursday morning. The Mets did not come back. Mamaea crapped in his pants again. Chicago scored double digits. The Mets had a measly four hits.
But...
Cincinnati and Arizona both lost too.
so, with four to go... I'm gettin' too old for this...
74) Brandon Sproat (9-26)
The Good
Sproat has excelled at supressing contact this season with a large portion of that coming from his sinker. He has a deep arsenal which has gradually transformed throughout the season, and he is seeing more success lately.
The Bad
After consistently hitting 100 MPH just a year ago, it feels like Sproat's elite velocity is more of a novelty than a staple. He also does not have a true put away offering, which his hamper his strikeout upside.
6. OF Herbiberto Rincon
Herbiberto Rincon is a 19-year-old outfield prospect in the New York Mets' minor league system.
Born on February 16, 2006, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, he stands at 6'1" and weighs 160 lbs. Rincon bats and throws right-handed, primarily playing center field (61 games), with experience in right field (18 games) and left field (12 games).
He signed with the Mets as an undrafted free agent in 2023 on a minor league contract worth $150,000.
2023 – Mets DSL Orange: 196-PA, 39-K, 23-BB, 1-HR, 21-RBI, 17-SB, .301/.398/.373/.771
2024 – Mets DSL Orange: 165-PA, 26-K, 19-BB, 1-HR, 25-RBI, 13-SB, .207/.303/.279/.582
2025 – Mets DSL Orange: 206-PA, 30-K, 19-BB, 2-HR, 27-RBI, 34-SB, .314/.383/.438/.821
Career Overview
Rincon debuted professionally in 2023 with the Dominican Mets 2 (Rk), appearing in 44 games as a raw, toolsy outfielder with speed and potential for power. He has yet to establish himself at higher levels but is viewed as an intriguing international signee due to his athleticism and frame, which could add strength as he develops. No major awards or promotions have been noted through the 2025 season, and detailed scouting reports highlight his center field defense and base-running upside, though contact and plate discipline remain areas for growth.
Rincon remains in extended spring training or awaiting potential assignment for the instructional league, with no reported injuries.

What impact is this swoon having on Pete Alonso wanting to stay in Queens? — Anonymous
Will: It’d be surprising if it had much of any impact. Alonso and his agent, Scott Boras, want the best deal in free agency. If the Mets present the best offer, it’s doubtful their meltdown from the regular season would create much hesitation.

New York Mets: RHP Frankie Montas ($17M)
Projected: 102.0 IP, 4.35 ERA, 8.6 K/9, 1.0 fWAR
Actual: 38.2 IP, 6.28 ERA, 7.5 K/9, 0.0 fWAR
Aside from re-signing Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas was the biggest offseason addition (from an AAV perspective) to New York's pitching staff. But what a colossal waste of $34M that turned out to be. He didn't make his season debut until New York's 80th game, made zero quality starts and is now going to miss the entire 2026 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Postseason Rotation
14. New
York Mets
RHP Nolan McLean (4-1,
1.27 ERA, 46 K, 42.2 IP)
LHP David Peterson (9-6,
3.98 ERA, 149 K, 167.1 IP)
RHP Brandon Sproat (0-1,
3.94 ERA, 15 K, 16.0 IP)
RHP Clay Holmes (11-8,
3.69 ERA, 127 K, 158.2 IP)
Other Candidates: LHP Sean
Manaea, RHP Jonah Tong
The Mets have leaned hard on rookies Nolan McLean, Jonah
Tong and Brandon Sproat down the stretch, and there's a good chance at least
two of those guys find their way into a four-man playoff rotation.
Sean Manaea (3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER) and Clay Holmes (3.2 IP,
4 H, 0 ER) shared a piggyback game on Sunday, and that could be how those two
veterans are deployed in October, with Holmes already well past his career-high
in innings and Manaea struggling to find any level of consistency after missing
the first half of the season.

Jonah Tong
Jonah Tong’s final numbers look laughable. He posted a
1.43 ERA with matching 40.5 K% and Whiff% to boot. He was utterly dominant
despite some underlying command concerns and forced his way onto the Mets
amidst their playoff push.

Mack,
ReplyDeleteAre the three DSL players in the Mets traditional Fall Instructional League or is this a new DSL Instructioal League? Sounds like an excellent way to get some additional work for the upcoming players.
That's a great question that I don't have an answer for. I will try and find out
DeleteThey are members of the DSL Instrucks that will take place in the fall at the Mets complex
Deletewhat are the chances Angry Mike is on assignment in Chicago or Miami yelling at the players and staff to get it together ? I think Mets remain set up for annual success but my goodness even i have to admit Stearns needs to take a little heat for the pitching decisions this past offseason. That being said im no being ridiculous like Metstwitter, Stearns is great at his job overall and needs to stay longterm with Mets org.
ReplyDeleteAngry is either:
DeleteA. Helping POTUS at the White Hose negotiate tariffs with Turkey
B. Investiging paranormal activity outside guest house on Lainey Wilson's digs
C. Breaking in on new job at their headquarters
Ernest, if he has another off-season and trade deadline like this year how do you trust him moving forward?
ReplyDeleteDo you force a GM on him so he can concentrate on the business side?
One thing I haven't seen discussed anywhere is the number of innings our rookie pitchers have thrown this year (saving our staff to this point). I know young pitchers have innings counts, but this is uncharted territory and it's only going to get worse if we do hold on to the WC spot.
ReplyDeleteJust my two cents, of course.
I heard Mike was helping out ICE and then he's off to "talk" to Putin and having him get his s**t together. JoeP I agree but heard Cohen Sterns and Mendy are tight so objective conversations might be few and far between to our dismay but someone has to pay if we miss the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteYou know, if the Mets had kept Quintana, Severino and Houser they would have a solid staff especially when you factor in McLean.
ReplyDeleteI think Stearns is a good baseball man but pretty much every move he made backfired. He also completely discounted chemistry. Should have kept OMG - Mets made the same mistake in 1986 when during the offseason they refused to sign Ray Knight and traded Mitchell
