In addition to major league regulars that could be traded the Mets also have some irregulars from the bench as well as a bevy of minor leaguers who might be attractive to prospective trading partners.
Ronny Mauricio for awhile looked to be a major league star in the making. He was coming off a sensational AAA season back in 2023 during which he hit .292 with 23 HRs, 71 RBIs and 24 SBs. Then, of course, came the season long injury that cost him all of 2024. He’s accumulated 168 ABs at the major league level split across a few seasons but it’s not looked good. For 2025 he was buried on the bench even when no one else at 2B nor 3B were establishing themselves at star level.
For Luisangel Acuna it is even worse. His minor league numbers were promising enough that it appeared the Mets may have gotten a solid major league hitter but the major league efforts have not even come close. Back in AAA during 2025 Acuna looked ready to break through. In over 100 ABs he was hitting .304. Unfortunately his major league average is just .248 in over 200 ABs. He and Mauricio may be packaged to help address team needs as they don’t appear to be part of the future roster.
Then in the minors there are several interesting players who could draw interest. Perhaps the biggest surprise of 2025 was the late promotion of standout Jonah Tong who was working on a stellar year. Between Binghamton and Syracuse he went 10-5 over 22 starts with a 1.43 ERA, a very high level of strikeouts and a manageable number of walks. Then he got to Queens and all of it fell apart. He finished the year having made 5 starts going 2-3 with a (gulp!) 7.71 ERA and giving up more than 5 walks per 9 innings pitched. Yes, he’s very young and the talent is notable but for those reasons he may be valued very highly if offered up in trade packages.
Brandon Sproat is a bit harder to evaluate. He had a long run in AAA this season where he was very much on top of his game. In 2025 he pitched to a 4.24 ERA above his career minor league mark of 3.83. In the majors he was not quite that solid. He was 0-2 over 4 starts with a 4.79 ERA. That was actually better than many of the Mets other starters but certainly not outstanding. He too could become part of a trade package as he does not have Tong’s pedigree.
After that we have minor leaguers yet to make their major league debut but whose resumes suggest they are prime prospects. In no particular order consider the case of Jett Williams. After struggling to recover from injury Williams has only accumulated a career minor league average of .256. However, why he keeps drawing attention is his ability to play all over the field and get on base with great frequency. He has a career OBP of .388 and steals with abandon. In 2025 he tallied 34 SBs and in 2023 before injury cost him much of 2024 he had 45.
Carson Benge is mentioned as the center fielder of the future. He has demonstrated not only strong defensive skills, but in 2025 between three teams he hit .281 with 15 HRs, drove in 73 and stole 22 bases. In two college seasons he hit .345 and .335. The potential is there for him to be a credible major leaguer. He has had very little minor league time — just 131 games — so despite people clamoring for him to get an Opening Day spot between Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto, it’s likely he will get to start the year in Syracuse.
After that you have quite a few other minor leaguers who could be moved in packages but most of them have not yet made the long term stay in AAA. In this list you would find people like Jack Wenninger, Jonathan Santucci, Jonathan Pintaro, the AFL duo of Nick Morabito and Chris Suero, A.J. Ewing, Jacob Reimer and Ryan Clifford. There are many others in the Mets systems of note, but lower level prospects usually don’t get as much trade value as ones who have at least made it to AA.

Good morning.
ReplyDeleteMorning too
ReplyDeleteWho gets traded depends if the Mets go big or even bigger.
Players I have on the cusp are:
Jonathan Santucci
Noah Hall
David Hurtado
Chris Suero
Daiverson Guitterrez
Jett Williams (if Mets go very high)
Yorber Semprum
Nick Morabito (currently being showcased)
Edward Lantiqua
Yunior Amparo
Mauricio can't show anything while sitting on the bench. The Mets just wasted a year of development by having him with the team instead of the minors. Why is he not playing in the Dominican winter league?
ReplyDeleteSproat has a history of struggling when goes into another level and then adjusts. That is what happened at AAA. Why does anyone expect for him not to adjust in the majors?. I don't read anything about Tong's struggles in the ML. To me, they both still need a couple of months at the AAA level.
I think Benge has to be considered Untouchable if he really can play CF
ReplyDeletewe cannot have another PCA situation
