Mack's Mets feature: Hot Thread

We are in the “Hot Stove” season, where every conversation centers around the latest news in MLB trades and free agent acquisitions.

Often we will include a feature where our writers discuss what is happening, but this year we want more involvement from the readers.

We have combined two traditional features, “Hot Stove” and “Open Thread”  into this year’s “Hot Thread” which will run every Tuesday at 6:00am EST.

Considering the recent market activity and knowing your team’s needs, what would your next move be?  Hope we have sparked your interest! Tell us in the comments below.

Last week’s transactions:

Raisel Iglesias recently re-signed with the Braves for one year at $16M.

Baltimore Orioles signed Ryan Helsley to a two-year, $28M contract.

The Cubs agreed to terms with Phil Maton. 2 years, $14.5M.

Last week’s rumors:

Fifteen MLB teams showed interest in signing Helsley before he chose the Orioles.

The Phillies are far from a deal with Kyle Schwarber as many teams show interest

This week’s questions:

1.  Okay... Helsley is lost. Let's say Diaz dances to another team too. Who, in your opinion, should the Mets go after outside the organization... or, who should they name from within?

2.  How high should the Mets go to ensure that Diaz forgets his dancing shoes and stays in NY?

3.  So, Schwarber isn't a lock for the Filthies. Is he someone the Mets should go after. and, if not, what are your thoughts, going forward, on the 2026 Mets first baseman?

  1. Boy, the Mets made question #1 here a lot easier to answer after signing Devin Williams to a three-year deal.

I have made this subject the lead story in my RANDOM THOUGHTS post coming up at 9am.

    The question now should read:

Will Williams be the 2026 Mets closer or should the Mets now continue to try and bring back Edwin Diaz, which would create the most talented back end of a bullpen in baseball?

    1. It would be nice to have Diaz AND Williams in the pen. Ross and Lambert have proven nothing yet. Williams had several ugly outings last year. But starting in early Sept, thru the playoffs, he had 13 consecutive scoreless innings. Welcome.

  2. Regarding Schwarber...

I have a funny feeling that Boras and Pete will huddle today to discuss the Williams acquisition by the Mets, making this a much more attractive place for Alonso to finish out his career. They both have learned that they are not going to get a 348-year contract from anyone and a Tomahawk steak at Peter Luger's for the next four or five years might be the way to go.

    1. There will always be one team that gives Pete a 5 or 6 year contract( maybe Orioles). BTW it’s the Porterhouse for 2 at Lugers. They never served a Tomahawk there.

    1. Tom is always around supplying sense

    2. Schwarber's contract will include a provision to move the right field fence in.

  4. You have to still sign Diaz, Williams scares me. Had a pretty tough stretch last year. Maybe with Alonso on the same team it will finally purge his demons.

There is a clause in the contract that if he gets traded, he gets an additional 1m. Could be a great move. Sign Diaz and trade Williams when Ross and Lambert are ready. Or keep them all.

  5. I'd pass on Schwarber. The Citi splits are scary. It's not the Phili bandbox.

  6. Mack, I was waiting for a Tom and fences remark. The babe wouldn't have scared me; he played in stadiums that were twice the size of Citi field.

BTW, the only person who scares me is my wife. She'd make Bob Gibson look like a girlie-man

    1. The price of losing Tom as a writer... no more fence posts

    2. Ok, no more… we love Tom. A little rubbing isn’t bad…

    3. No Gus

Tom won't be adding content here until, at least, spring training

There are three more posts on consecutive Mondays but they were already written before he took pause

  7. The Mets should go all out to retain Diaz. Williams is not enough. No more player opt-outs though.

    1. I NOW agree

Steve got his casino. His accountant can show him his projected net value by 2030

      Fook the penalty

Go get Pete, Edwin, and an SP1

  8. Love it Mack. Throw in a trade for Tatis Jr. and we have some team.

    1. The Mets have the prospects to pull that off, beginning with Jett Williams who is now a man without a position

  9. Stearns is not going to wait around for players to dictate, and good for him. They are still “interested” in Diaz, but he scares me. His lack of interest in holding runners isn’t getting any better, and if you’re paying $20MM, you need to take note.

I love Emilio Pagan’s numbers away from Cincy and as a fly ball pitcher he should love the deep fences of Citifield.
