Reese Kaplan -- There's a Lot of Roster Action Outside of Citifield

According to the calendar it is now January 9th and the Mets are going into the 2026 season with one starting quality outfielder, no experienced first baseman, one missing relief pitcher with experience and the same starting rotation more-or-less that was responsible for the decimation of the 2025 season which resulted in no October baseball for the Mets except on television.

While many of us have been openly questioning the accountability of David Stearns while other teams seem willing to make transactional changes via trades and free agency, the defenders will quickly point out that there is a month until Spring Training begins and changes will be made.

Day by day it appears more and more that the roster reinforcements will have to come via trade rather than via the dwindling list of available free agents.  Yes, there are some nice players still unsigned that include the much ballyhooed lucky quintet on offense of Cody Bellinger, Bo Bichette, Alex Bregman, Eugenio Suarez and Kyle Tucker.  Already signed are Munetaka Murakami, Josh Naylor, Kazuma Okamoto and Ryan O’Hearn, Sung Mun Song and many, many others.

On the starting rotation side the best of the remaining guys on the auction block include Ranger Suarez and Framber Valdez.  Gone from the bidding include Dylan Cease, Tatsuya Imai and Michael King.  Yes, there are others still out there but to use a good shopping analogy, picture waiting until Wednesday night to begin your Thanksgiving shopping only to discover less desirable ingredients, dented cans and some of the better options gone completely.

Guys who are left include, for example, 43 year old Justin Verlander will go into the Hall of Fame when he retires but he hasn’t made 30 starts in a season since 2019.  It’s now 2026.

On the bullpen side give kudos to the acquisition of former Brewers closer Devin Williams, a guy Stearns knows quite well.  His contract became doubly desirable when Edwin Diaz was seen leaving on a jet plane for Los Angeles.

Other relievers who were available and connected include include Shawn Armstrong, Pete Fairbanks, Hunter Harvey, Ryan Helsley, Raisel Iglesias, Kenley Jansen, Brad Keller, Andrew Kittredge, Phil Maton, Drew Pomeranz, Matt Strahm, Tyler Rogers, Gregory Soto, Robert Suarez and Kirby Yates.  Yeah, the return of Dickie Lovelady is right on par with these moves, right?

Then there are the trades that have been made.  Yes, David Stearns has made a couple of them.  He landed Marcus Semien at age 35 and a low level minor leaguer for Jeff McNeil.  Other teams have picked up most recently Edgar Cabrera, Willson Contreras, Adolis Garcia, Sonny Grey, Merrill Kelly, Brandon Lowe, Jake Mangum and Taylor Ward,  Yes, those early (and questionable) Stearns actions are certainly not the best of the bunch.

Going back to the Thanksgiving dinner analogy, it will take some deep level creativity to form a presentable and impressive spread when there are no more stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pies and a myriad of other expected quality offerings.  Here’s hoping the only turkeys missing are the kind you pop into the oven, not the one hired to reinforce the team.

I really don’t expect much to happen going forward

Maybe a new attempt for Skukal

Possibly a Tucker short team deal

Then fill ins with one year contract guys

Too many prospects bubbling plus the impending strike may create a sit back and wait approach this spring

  2. I have total faith in Stearns…doesn’t everybody?

  3. The obvious holes will be filled. Just still unclear in which direction they will take. If the market breaks favorably, we will get some of the cream of the crop & if not, we will get more modest, professional transitional pieces.

It is clear the Mets have set their internal prices and the market is still developing (otherwise these players would have signed already). The upshot, if an opportunity (or more) opens up, the Mets can move without hesitation.

Stearns has created optionally - which is a very powerful thing. It just sucks for fans while we wait and wait and wait & wait…

    1. The next CBA should put a December 31 deadline on free agent signing of multi-year contracts. After Jan 1, only one year contracts. That would speed this molasses up.

  4. Guys, I have to agree with Mack. I don't see them doing much more. Of course he will fill out the roster. Pick up an outfielder, possibly another bat or two. He will pick up a mid-tier starting pitcher and a reliever or two and go to war with what he has this year. He can't have blind faith in Benge to make the opening day roster, that would be irresponsible.

He finally gets the chance to build the organization his way. Everyone keeps clamoring to sign the Tuckers and Valdez's. But look at his MO. He hates giving out long term deals. He doesn't want to lose draft picks associated with these signings.

He will wait out the market and sign players at a higher AAV for 1 or 2 year deals. He will then incorporate our prospects in the next 2 years.

  5. Aside from getting another reliever, I don't see much more than that coming our way and in my opinion, it shouldn't be.
The Mets have a bunch of great looking prospects in the cusp of becoming major leaguers. You can't just block them by signing expensive players on long term deals and you can't trade them away for a player with a year left in his contract.

I have questioned some of Stearns signings like (Montas), but I give him a lot of credit for the great improvement of the minor leagues. Improve from within, that's his plan and I agree with it.

    1. Actually credit for recent minor league prospects go to both the domestic and Latin minions that are totally responsible for making these choices

  6. Most important thing to remember, the off-season lasts into spring training. Many players are still waiting on a team and they are the ones unemployed. The teams have the money, so a patient GM will get a good deal. The only guys that got signed lately are the Japanese players and that was right at their deadline.

  7. I don't expect much to happen until the remaining free agents lower their expections concering the number of years that they want, The longer this drags out the more it becomes a buyers market. Stearns is finally getting chance to put his team together. Nothing in the past several years has worked out for us so why not let someone who has put a winning franchise together in the past see if he can do it again. Stears did not get to where he is at by being stupid. He has a reputation for for being a top exective and leader. I am a New York Mets fan . Players come and go , the team always remains. So get over losing your favorite player. If you can't get over it then you can always switch teams to Baltimore of L.A. LGM!!!

    2. ABSOLUTELY! Too many fans/amateur GMs seem to think ST starts tomorrow and no good players are still available.

  8. No matter what, NOTHING can be worse that last year’s performance. At times, some of the worst team baseball ever played. I remember all of us bitching & moaning in June & August (just wait until you see how bad thy were quantitatively - yes shameless plug on my 2025 review series). Regardless of the remaining moves
