Tom Brennan - Green Shoots

A.J. EWING IS A GREEN SHOOT INDEED

On a night where the Rumble Ponies amazingly were no hit for the second time in their first 3 weeks, and where the downgraded Cyclones met their 4 hits per game quota, there were a few very green shoots:

Carson Benge is hot.

He has gone 7 for his last 15 to rapidly jump to just under the Mendoza line at .195.

And AJ Ewing in his AAA debut? A single, double, triple, and a walk.

He now is raking at .373/.500/.627.

.500? Star stuff.

Maybe, just maybe, AJ was created by AI.

The Mets’ 8-0 win?  We will see. But they are 1-0 in their last game.

  1. Who is better, Cam Schlitter (1.51 ERA) or Nolan McLean? May be debated for years.

  2. Binghamton (including Ewing’s AA strong games) is hitting just .197, othwersise, they’d be hitting like Brooklyn at .184.

  3. Clifford smacked a long two run homer, but went hitless with 2 Ks in his other 4 at bats, so is that a good night or a bad night for him?

    1. Seems like a “typical” night

    2. RVH, 39 Ks in 26 games for Clifford so far. Very high.

Progress that is truly substantive against AAA pitching might look like just 26 Ks in his next 39 games.

      On that, I am pessimistic.

  4. The Mets really don’t have good offensive prospects other than Pena and maybe Ewing. Reimer is off to a lousy start, Suero is low average, Serrano hasn’t popped and Clifford is a wind mill. Voit is showing bust, Houck already did, and Guzman is too low to really count on. Honestly, they drafting evaluations stink.

    1. Gus, I completely agree. And Reimer’s slowstart is mystifying.

  5. Ewing was - and still sometimes is - a 2B, and reportedly a pretty good one. Given Semien’s AB’s, I’d love to see Ewing get more time at 2B in Syracuse than he’d been getting in AA.

  6. AAA seems to be the level where players level off. If Ewing can thrive in Syracuse, he is destined for the majors. We will be watching very closely. I think that his competitiveness can get him through.

  7. Ewing’s .500 OBP this year is crazy. I expect real success.

  8. Benge lost a home run in Citi Field this month. Long out instead. Had it gone out, he’d be 17 for 82, with 3 HRs. Not bad. We’d feel better about him. The park erodes hitter results. And hitters feel the heat.
