Tom Brennan - Highs and Lows in Metsville

Mets lose 9-6 after leading 5-0. Ouch.

Just a few thoughts. Short article.

The Mets followed their huge 10 run 12th inning on Monday with an early 5-0 lead on Tuesday, with one of their aces on the mound in Nolan McLean. Things went terribly wrong after that, with misplays galore. Games like that are why teams don’t win 120 games. Final losing score 9-6.

Nick Morabito had a very active night in the outfield, just missing a spectacular catch that turned into a Keystone cops, grand slam for Washington’s Wood, Just missing catching a home run clearing the wall the next inning, and making a great grab on a ball that was about 3 feet into the stands down the field line in Full territory. He went hitless, with an HBP.

Yesterday, I wrote that Bo Bichette was about to get cooking. He ended up on Monday with three hits, and his first 2 ABs on Tuesday added two 2 run homers. It’s always fun when you call them.

But his throw to home plate on what should’ve been an easy cut down of a runner at the plate sailed away from Luis Torrens for a key error.

Then, Mark Vientos at first base went bonehead, when he held the ball too long on a guy caught in a rundown, allowing the guy to get back to third base. Keith Hernandez, he is not.

Yesterday was not, and I repeat not, all about run prevention. The defense for the Mets yesterday was all about win prevention. It prevented the Mets from winning.

My only other note from yesterday is that the Brooklyn cyclones even hit less yesterday than they normally do. They accumulated two hits and added 14 strikeouts, and left the game, nearly 40 games into the season, with a mind-blowing .178 batting average. I recommend that each batter take bats to the plate in future games. It might help them hit better.

I hadn’t talked to my brother in a while, but Steve brought up the fact that the Mets minor leagues that were supposed to be so good, but they look pretty darn lousy to him.

I couldn’t disagree. Brooklyn’s offense is Exhibit A.

  1. .178. With a DH? Really? That is LOW.

  2. While watching the Mets last night, I found myself thinking thinking of the great, but virtually unknown, be bop comedian, Lord Buckley, who concluded his retelling of the story of Jonah and Whale with the totally off the wall but fitting statement that he (falsely but intentionally) attributed to Confucious (who said no such thing) : "If you get down to it, and you cannot do it ..... There you jolly well are, aren't you!"

  3. Mendoza NEEDS TO GO! They are playing great with Ewing in the lineup yet he decides to bench him. The basic fielding and fundamentals displayed from this team have been terrible all year and they continue to be the demise of this team. The manager’s job is to get the most and best out of his players and manage the bullpen, Mendoza has failed at this for 2 years.

    1. I couldn’t fault Mendoza, myself for putting in TAYLOR, who has been hot the last few games. But the reality is, Taylor’s hot streaks only last a few games. Hopefully Mendoza won’t make that mistake again.

Every time I look at Vientos in the field, I wonder if he’s ever really thought about what to do in difficult situations. His failure to throw to third base quickly allow the guy to get back to 3rd base. Unreal. Major league stupid.

Again, if Morabito made a spectacular catch on what turned into wood’s inside the park grand slam, they win easily. Taylor didn’t bother to look to see if the ball was going somewhere else than into Nick’s mitt, where it did not end up, and instead the ball was rolling away. TAYLOR picked the wrong guy to go bonehead. Wood turned on the jets. The play was so bad by Taylor that Wood, had he been running all out right from the batter’s box, could have total five bases instead of four. That dude is fast.

    2. Taylor is gonna get more playing time because of one heroic 3 run bomb against the Yanks, but will fall back to his light hitting ways quickly. Ewing needs to play every day. Taylor is a fine 4th outfielder but should not play over our future CF

    3. Jon, I agree. Taylor time should be limited to defense.

    1. Bichette is back offensively. That bad throw home was awful. Do better.

Benge for ROY? He is putting that back on the table.

Thornton has an easy task today and his major league debut. He just has to figure out a way to overcome the best offense in baseball in the nationals.

  5. You were right on, Tom. It was not all about run prevention. The feeble attempt to improve this team's defense with a bunch of washed up guys who can't play under the spotlight of New York has translated this team from contender to laughing stock. After Bichette's throwing error, I changed the channel to the Knicks. Maybe I should start writing about them.

    1. It is funny. Paul, I had the next on for a little while, saw them go from down six to up nine. And I turned it back on later and they were down 20, and I thought what the heck is going on here? But then Madison Square Garden fever took over and they rally from that 22 point deficit with seven minutes to go and one in overtime by 11. Pretty stunning.

It shows you what I totally fired a crowd can do for a team. If that game had been in Cleveland, I’ll bet the Knicks would’ve lost by 30.

Back to the Mets. Would the fan base really get fired up for this team? Last year‘s team? Probably this year‘s team probably not. Sterns traded away the fire.

    2. Paul, that throw by BB to the plate was horrible and inexcusable. A gold glove shortstop makes that throw turn into an out 100 times out of 100. It was not a difficult play at all.
