Obviously many changes are coming to the Mets unless they’re embracing total and embarrassing failure with a bear hug. Many people are destined to leave in free agency and others have simply worn out their welcome. Instead of figuring out who will be gone, let’s instead look at who likely will be back under the helm of a new skipper when 2027 Spring Training rolls around. So who will you bring back?
Jorge Polanco is going to be back. He earns too much money and provided too little in the very brief time he was on the field to make him tradeable. You’re either keeping him here and hoping for the best or you cut him loose and eat the $20 million he’s still owed.
Marcus Semien is in a similar situation. He has not provided much with his bat and this trend has been relevant for the past few years. Again, either you need to to eat a lot of contract money or plan for him being the most expensive bench player in the league.
Francisco Lindor has a contract that makes him difficult to trade. The $31.4 million per year until 2031 and a full no trade clause make him a Met for the foreseeable future. Aside from his injury riddled 2026 campaign he has shown to earn his keep, so a great many Mets supporters will not be upset to see him take him customary position at shortstop.
Third base is a big black hole. Bo Bichette is turning into the kind of hitter expected though not worth over $40 million per year. He has the opt out on his side, so no one knows if he will be back or not. Obviously neither Brett Baty nor Mark Vientos are the answer.
The current outfield as it is deserves to be back. Juan Soto is a true superstar, delivering power, speed and batting average. He is the kind of guy who can do damage at any time with a single swing of the bat. Carson Benge has certainly righted his early foundering ship. A.J. Ewing initially looked slightly overmatched be he too has found his stroke and deserves to be in the lineup every day.
Catcher Francisco Alvarez is hitting for a higher batting average than any other time in his major league career but it seems to be coming at the expense of his long ball power. That tradeoff is acceptable and while he’s still earning very little he’s not likely to go anywhere.
In the starting rotation you have two rock solid entries in young hurlers Nolan McLean and Christian Scott. If they stay healthy then they could provide the next 3-4 years of low cost quality every fifth day on the mound. If Clay Holmes does not opt out then you have 60% of a starting rotation ready to go.
Both Sean Manaea and Kodai Senga are a lot like the unwanted infielders whose contracts are unmovable. At some point you just have to swallow hard and eat the bad money.
The bullpen currently has Devin Williams in a multi year deal. After him is possibly another year of Luke Weaver, Huascar Brazoban and not a lot else unless you think Reed Garrent or Dedniel Nunez are going to be key pieces. There are no lefties with both A.J. Minter and Brooks Raley set to hit free agency.
Yes, there are a lot of needs. Notice there is no first baseman. There is no resolution at second base. There is a huge question at third base. Two starting pitchers and probably two to three more relievers are needed.
Oh yeah, a manager, too...

Mitch Voit by mid 2027 will be playing for the Mets. Soon, Nick Morabito will be.
ReplyDeleteMitch, Nick, Ewing, and Benge will be 4 jackrabbits with decent power and great defense.
Trade for Christian Walker for 1B at deadline, resign Holmes, sign Skubal, sign Luis Arreaz to play 2B. Moribato on bench, cut Senga or one inning reliever, semien is expensive utility If. Deal with 3B depending on Bo’s status — I bet he resigns for next year, $42M guaranteed is pretty good deal. One of Wenninger, tong, Santucci, Thornton will make ‘27 rotation at some point. Another will make BP, one may get traded for future long term 1B & other IF role.
ReplyDeleteFill in BP as usual in off-season.
They make them “competitive” next year & minimizes player turnover somewhat compared to previous years.

Mr. & Mrs. Met
Ewing, Soto, Benge, Alvarez, Morabito, Lindor
McLean, Scott, Holmes, Wennington, Thornton
The Pen
That's as far as I can go right now
I think we need to think about a three year plan overall. Holmes wants to be extended. So that is automatic yes for me, giving us three righties who show up. Would love for McLean to settle on three pitch repetoire with a fourth lower usage pitch, and for Scott to develop a change-up that moves in and down on RH and down and away of LH. Holmes throws heavy sinker. Lots of variety there. You need 8 starters over the course of season. Bichette is going nowhere and that's fine with me. Morabito is a rotational addition to the outfield. Not good enough to be regular starter yet until he hits RH pitching better. Senga needs too much rest to be a BP arm. I believe Arraez makes sense at 2B as he has shown much better D this year and always has premiere Bat to Ball skills. Can't trade Lindor off this year's performance. Walker makes sense but you can't sign him for only one year. I look for 2 years with the second being a mutual option year. Polanco is done after next year. If Alvarez is sent to a movement specialist and it doesn't take, he has to be traded in the off season or it will be a declining version of what you see now. Raley, Minter and Peralta go in trades at deadline. We need next wave of outfield prospects and athletes. We have lots of potential pitchers in A/A+ but they need to sort themselves out. You can sign Arraez for 3 yrs/2years guaranteed and club option for 3rd.
ReplyDeleteWe have a potentially excellent catcher and hopefully 3 major league potential infielders in the minors now. Voit, Pena and Asignen. All need varying degrees of further development. Voit can replace Arraez when ready and Arraez can move to play 1B from time to time until Soto is ready to replace Walker at 1B. I have completely different take on our AA and AAA pitchers. Every team needs pitchers and most want pitchers under team control for as long as possible. In my mind, the one with the best stuff is Santucci. Tong has highest trade value, the rest are best used for additional trade value including Wenninger. His stuff is not plus and he needs command but doesn't yet have it. For a lot of teams he will seem a soldi back end piece but not for a true contender. These are the guys you are better off trading to fill holes in your time alignment. You will get 1 or 2 pitchers making it to the majors from you A/A+ group including perhaps Hurtado, and one or two relievers. Why isn't someone working on Lambert's control as number 1 priority. Everyone else at AA/AAA pitching is a trade asset.
To me Alvarez is a major trade asset along with Tong if used wisely. On the Mets Tong is at best a high leverage reliever/perhaps closer down the road, but I still prefer him as high trade asset.
Again, do not allow yourself to be outbid for Skubal. He uses his legs very effectively which means he can maintain heat and health. I also would sign a 2nd free agent pitcher. My preference is Ryan but if I had to find a less expensive alternative it would be Gausman with lots of experience. I am betting the Mets keep Manaea as the salary is too steep for a trade. He'll be gone in a year. Someone will bite on Senga.
I don't think McLean is capable of being reigned in. You get what you get with this hugely talented pitcher. He's having a shite year with command issues because his best pitches are designed to end up out of the zone. Yet he still owns an ERA of around 3.50
DeleteI would extend Holmes through 2029. I'm a big fan of going with what you have if what you have is good. Holmes is VERY good.
Third up is Scott
I go from there
I want a 2027 emphasis on defense. Thus, team controlled players like Ewing and Morabito are important to me.
DeletePlay Ewing in the Arizona Fall League this off season exclusively at second base.
Then make him your starting 2027 second baseman while inserting Nick Morabito in left
And I forgot. It's July so guess who started hitting again. Yep. Brett Baty. Pitchers are getting tired, Baty can catch up with their fastballs.Someone help shorten his swing a bit please. Bet he doesn't get traded because no back up infielder at the upper affiliates can hit at the major league level and he is under control for next year. So he is going to stay. Vientos is gone. Needs a new environment and can't play any position.
ReplyDeletePut the FA money this year into pitching first, then short term contracts at 1 and 2B. Lots of heavy bench salaries in Semien and Manaea, but they are vets and can have a role.
The most interesting question for me is what to do with Weaver. I also would like to resign when they are free agents either Minter or Raley. It has really helped the BP to have more than one lefty available.
In his current state, you have to realize that Alvarez adds nothing to the team and needs to be traded or his mechanics signficantly altered but time is of the essence: trade while he is still seen as valuable and find a way to get a good defensive catcher with some ability to hit in another trade, perhaps Jeffreys from Minnesota who won't be fully healed until next year. Together, he and Torrens can hold down the fort until Yovanny is ready to be eased in.
Trading with Minnesota would be fraudulent
ReplyDeleteWalker is signed thru 2027 at $20M so a trade keeps him for next year as a bridge. Offense & defense &some RH power. Bridge 1B & 2B next year. Morabito has not demonstrated he can hit sufficiently to play everyday. He is not as dynamic as Benge & Ewing. Fourth OF & play against some LH pitchers next year. He should come up after Taylor is traded at deadline to break in this year.
ReplyDeleteSign Arreaz for two years & he can replace Walker in ‘28 when Voit is ready for full time 2B or he can play SS & Lindor moves to 3B of Bichette opts out.
You can play Ewing on 2B and Morabito in RF for 2027
DeleteThen, in 2028, return Ewing to the OF, make Morabito OF4, and insert Voit in at second
I don’t trust Morabito in RF as a starter. He is an ok hitter in AAA. He was totally lost in his cup of coffee (I get small sample). He doesn’t project as a starter. Can’t bear another season with a .500-.600 ops everyday starter.
DeleteI don’t see it.
Morabito starts slow, but after mid-May, he rakes
DeleteOverall, this is a depressing article, because it reminds us of how many contracts the Mets signed that over-payed players who are not performing. The length of the contracts allows them to continue to be overpaid into the future. Only by eating those salaries can the Mets move on to a new future.
ReplyDeleteI look for better numbers for the rest of the year from:
DeleteVoit
Houck
R. Hernandez
Suero
Rudick
Gordon
Lambert
Houck sucks. Don’t see what you see. He hasn’t done squat in three seasons, strikes out too much. Another lost 1st round pick.
DeleteWho's telling Soto he's a DH?
ReplyDeleteSure would solve a lot if he became a DH or 1Bman
ReplyDelete2028. Also when Lindor moves to 3B
