Strike News

Well, it looks like the owners have come up with a new offer to the Player’s Association which sort of changes everything.

Among the highlights:

- baseball would eliminate high school eligibility

- baseball would cut the draft from 20 rounds to 12

-baseball would cut draft bonuses by 50%

-bonuses would be a set amount determined by draft position

-baseball would establish an International draft that would have the same amount of bonus compensation as the MLB amateur draft..

- MLB’s proposal also assures these changes will not impact the number of affiliated teams in the MiLB Professional Development License (PDL) system. MLB stated that the number of affiliated MiLB teams would remain at 120, and that MLB would not be seeking reductions in the 2030 PDL negotiations with MiLB club owners.

Thoughts?

  1. Less players, but more seasoned players will enter the development systems and be there longer. This eases the burden on lower market teams to keep up with the big spenders on staff salaries. Eliminate or at least reduce the behind-the-scenes meddling with international players.

  2. Mack,
This is off question, but this is an interesting question on another site. It is being reported that the Pirates are willing to trade their Competitive Balance draft selection, # 34, to better themselves for a wild card chance. If this is true, is this a great chance for the Mets to move some assets and get an additional draft choice this year? Thoughts anyone?

  3. I favor fewer rounds, which has the benefit of UDFA picking organizations that represent a better fit for them. Also increases competition for more players and advantages teams that do deeper and broader due diligence on players. Not sure what I feel about high school graduates because I am not sure what the reason is for it. If it is youth or age considerations then there is the horizontal equity issue with International Free Agents who are eligible to sign as soon as they are out of diapers. If it is a concern to make sure players who are drafted secure an education, I think a little honesty about the extent to which most high visibility sports athletes attend classes would be called for.
