B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

The B-Mets have struggled with runners in scoring
position and two outs all season, but when Binghamton
needed a big hit Sunday, Ruben Tejada came through. Tejada’s
three-run double in the seventh inning proved to be
decisive as the Binghamton used it to split the four-game set
with New Hampshire by winning 4-3. The double was Tejada’s
second in as many days. Mike Antonini was the beneficiary of
the hit, earning his third straight win with a quality start of six
innings giving up three runs on six hits. The bullpen made the
4-3 lead standup with three scoreless innings down the
stretch. Roy Merritt notched his Eastern League-leading
eighth save in as many opportunities with 1.1 innings of work
to close it out.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

RHP Dylan Owen gets the
start for Binghamton tonight. Owen showed improvement in
his last start after a being rough up by Portland 4/17 for six
runs in three innings. He threw a season-long 5.2 innings last
Wednesday giving up three runs and striking out six Trenton
hitters on his way to a no-decision. For the year, Owen is 0-1
with a 7.24 ERA in 13.2 innings. His 10 walks are the second
most among pitchers in the Eastern League. Drafted in the
20th round in 2007 out of Francis Marion University, Owen
saw three starts with Binghamton at the end of 2008.
RHP Adam Mills will make his fourth start of the year for Portland
tonight. Mills was roughed up for six runs by New Britain
last Wednesday in a four-inning loss. For the season, Mills has
recorded an 0-1 mark and a 6.14 ERA in 14.2 innings. This is
second start at Hadlock Field where has enjoyed moderate
success this year, throwing 10.2 innings with a 3.38 ERA. Last
season, he made 11 starts with the Sea Dogs, going 0-5 with
a 4.00 ERA. Mills was Boston’s ninth round pick in 2007 out
of UNC-Charlotte where he was named First-Team All-America
by Baseball America going 14-2 with a 1.01 ERA in 142.2
innings as a 49er.

CARDIAC KID:

In his first season at AA, 19-year-old Ruben
Tejada has struggled at the plate overall, hitting just .235 in
14 starts. However, when Tejada comes to the plate with men
on base, he’s a different hitter. In 16 at-bats with men in scoring
position, he has 6 six hits, driving in 9 men, including 3-6
with runners in scoring position and two outs.

BOWMAN BUSTING OUT:

Shawn Bowman broke out of a 3-21
slump in his last five games with a 2-3 day at the plate Sunday,
including his team-leading second home run in the second
inning. He is tied with Ruben Tejada for the team lead in
RBI with nine.
