Gnats 4, GreenJackets 1

With the score tied at one in the top of the seventh inning, Juan Lagares singled home Josh Satin from second base to give the Sand Gnats a lead they wouldn’t relinquish as they defeated the Augusta GreenJackets, 4-1. Jordany Valdespin hit his second two-run home run in as many nights to give Savannah some insurance runs.

The game was a pitcher’s duel early on between Augusta starter Ari Ronick and Gnats hurler Jeff Kaplan. Kaplan allowed one run in five innings of work to go along with six strikeouts but he would not factor in the decision. Jeurys Familia (1-0) notched his first win, pitching the final four innings. Familia battled in the late innings and with the bases loaded in the ninth, he induced a game-ending double play off the bat of Wendell Fairley.

Valdespin, Jefry Marte and Juan Lagares all had two hits to pace the Sand Gnats Friday night. Valdespin now leads the club in home runs with two and is tied for the team lead in RBI with six. Savannah and Augusta have now met six times in 2009 with the Gnats taking five of the six games. It’s a match up of two southpaws on Saturday night from Lake Olmstead Stadium. LHP Robert Carson (0-1, 10.12) takes the mound looking to bounce back from a rough first outing last Sunday at home. LHP Kelvin Marte (0-0, 0.00) will take the mound for Augusta as the GreenJackets look for their first win at home.

The Sand Gnats return home on Monday to start a five-game homestand beginning with the New York Yankees affiliate, the Charleston RiverDogs. It’s a Military Monday at the ballpark with Family Four Packs (four tickets, hot dogs, chips and Cokes) available for $30.
