Trenton 5, B-Mets 4

The Binghamton Mets (1-1) lost their first extra-inning affair of the season Thursday night 5-4 at the hands of the Trenton Thunder (1-1) in 14 innings.

In a ballgame that took 4 hours and 42 minutes to complete, the two teams combined for 22 hits and 9 runs. With the ballgame tied in the bottom of the 14th inning, RHP Nick Abel walked the bases loaded setting the stage for Trenton 3B Marcos Vechionacci. Vechionacci hit Abel’s 1-1 offering up the middle of the drawn-in infield for a game-winning RBI single to give Trenton their first win of 2009.

After eight and a half innings, Binghamton led 3-2, but RHP John Madden could not hold onto the lead. With pinch-runner Justin Snyder at second base with two outs, Reegie Corona hit a soft single up the middle that was gloved by 2B Matt Bouchard. Bouchard proceeded to throw the ball away past 1B Lucas Duda allowing Snyder to score on the play sending the game to extra innings.

In extra innings, the B-Mets struck first with an unearned run against RHP Eric Wordekemper, who was throwing for the second straight night. D.J. Wabick hit a single through the left side of the drawn-in infield to score Duda who had advanced to third on an error committed by Thunder 2B Reegie Corona. This gave Binghamton the lead 4-3.

In the bottom of the 12th, Trenton loaded the bases with nobody out against LHP Adam Bostick before Abel was summoned from the pen. Abel proceeded to hit the first batter he faced, Edwar Gonzalez, plating the tying run. Then, however, Abel got Vechionacci to ground out to SS Ruben Tejada who threw to C Josh Thole for the force at home and then got a double-play groundball off the bat of Francisco Cervelli to escape the inning tied at four.

RHP Dylan Owen started for Binghamton and went five innings with a career-high five walks. Caleb Stewart notched his first home run of the season with a solo shot over the left field fence in the sixth inning.
