B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

RHP Jose Sanchez gave up five runs in the third
inning giving Connecticut a 6-0 lead and that was all that the
Defenders needed, as they went on to a 6-3 win over the BMets
Wednesday night. Sanchez went five innings giving up
six runs on eight hits and tied a season-high with four walks to
take his fifth loss. The five-run third was capped by Tyler La-
Torre’s two-run homer, which made it 6-0. Binghamton rallied
for three in the seventh thanks to three hits opening the inning
against starter Tim Alderson. However, that was all that
the B-Mets got against Alderson who went 6.1 innings giving
up three runs on nine hits to pick up the win. Daniel Otero
saved his 10th game of the season despite allowing the first
two to reach to start the inning. He has yet to be scored upon
in 2009.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

RHP Eric Brown will make his
second start of the season this morning against the Defenders.
Brown’s only other start this year came at New Hampshire
when Fernando Nieve missed his scheduled start due to a
family matter April 25. Brown went four innings giving up five
runs and took the loss. His last outing might as well have
been a start, as he threw 6.1 innings of scoreless relief May
14 against Trenton to pick up the win in Binghamton’s 8-7
come-from-behind decision. Brown is 3-2 with a 3.41 ERA in
29 innings this year. Last season, he began the year in the BMets’
rotation but ended the year in the bullpen with a 5.05
ERA and a 6-9 record. He was the Mets’ 18th-round selection
in the 2005 draft out of Wingate University (NC).

RHP Henry Sosa will make his eighth start of the year today.
Sosa is 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA in 33 innings. He has gone five
innings or better in four straight starts, including five innings
in his last start giving up two unearned runs in a no-decision
May 15 versus New Hampshire. He has given up just one
earned run in 16 innings at Dodd Stadium. The 23-year old
Dominican is considered the 13th-best prospect in the Giants
organization by Baseball America. He threw just 57 innings
last year between San Jose (High-A) and Augusta (Low-A).
WINNING LATE: The B-Mets have won three of their last five
games in their last at-bat. Tuesday, Binghamton plated two
runs in the ninth off Joe Paterson, who had yet to give up an
earned run in 2009, to win 4-2. The B-Mets won two games in
their last homestand in walk-off fashion against Trenton and
have won four of five overall.

GARCIA SNAPS OUT OF SLUMBER:

After going 0-14 in his last
six games, B-Mets centerfielder Emmanuel Garcia went 3-4 in
last night’s game, including a double and an RBI. After making
31 starts in the leadoff spot, Garcia has dropped to No. 8.
