Lucy:

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Mets were able to squeeze in five games last week, going 2-3 in the span. St. Lucie is an even 20-20 in third place in the South, seven games behind division-leading Fort Myers.
WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: RHP Bradley Holt has been a strikeout machine for the Mets. The Albemarle, N.C., native has whiffed 19 over his last 10 2/3 innings as he's limited opponents to two runs on eight hits and one walk. ... LF Brahiam Maldonado can't seem to buy a hit. He has just five in his last 36 trips to the plate for a .139 average.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Somehow SS Reese Havens turns into a hit machine with runners on base. Though he has only seven safeties in his last 43 at-bats (.163 average), he's used them to drive in 11 runs.
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: RHP Jenrry Mejia gets the highlights spotlight for St. Lucie. The Dominican native struck out seven over seven innings, limiting first-place Fort Myers to just three hits in a 6-2 road win May 20.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "Who knows? I don't know. It's just maybe been a little bit of an adjustment. I still don't consider myself a true power hitter. It's just something that's happened," CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis told the Sebastian Sun regarding his recent power output.

Gnats:

THE SEASON SO FAR: The Sand Gnats, having lost three straight, are 23-20. They are third in the Southern Division, a half-game behind Charleston and Rome.
WHO'S HOT: OF Josh Satin is ninth in the league at .329 (48-for-146). ... RHP Jeff Kaplan (4-1, 1.23) is second in the SAL in ERA, while RHP Jeurys Familia (3-2, 1.52) is fourth. ... OF Juan Lagares hit .444 (8-for-18) last week to improve to .291 (39-for-134).
WHO'S NOT: OF Sean Ratliff suffered through an 8-for-42 slump that dropped his average to .308 (53-for-172). ... C Jean-Luc Blaquiere is scuffling at .197 (13-for-66). ... 3B Jefry Marte is in a 3-for-33 funk that has dropped his average to .194 (33-for-170). He's struck out 45 times.
NEWS & NOTES: Lagares has had runs like this before but has never put up numbers the Mets had expected. This season, in his third SAL stint, he is playing with much more confidence, both at the plate and in the field. He's still only 20 and seems to have learned from the tough experiences of the last two seasons.
DID YOU KNOW?: Sand Gnats skipper Edgar Alfonzo recently recorded his 200th win. While this is his first season with the Sand Gnats and his fifth as a manager in the Mets system, he has never ended a season with a losing record.

  1. I agree with you about Lagares. I am impressed with his defense-this is his first year playing the outfield for the Gnats and he has only made a couple of errors. He is starting to hit better.

  2. And he's still young too, Wally.

Sorry we haven't hooked up, but the Doc won't let me drive alone anymore for that distance...
