New Met: IF Matt Gaski

First baseman Eric Campbell and outfielder Juan Lagares have been placed on the Savannah disabled list, the New York Mets announced today. Campbell heads to the DL with left rotator cuff tendonitis while Lagares lands on the DL for a right wrist injury. Outfielder Daniel Stegall and infielder Matt Gaski have been added to the Savannah roster to fill the open spots. Campbell, 22, was hitting .417 in his last four games for Savannah. The Norwich, Conn. native was tied for the team lead in home runs with four and led the team in RBIs with 29. Lagares, 20, brought his batting average up to .290 over the past two weeks (up from .255 on May 13). In the last homestand he was one of the only Gnats to consistently register hits as he went 10-for-26 with two doubles and two RBI.

Stegall, 21, joins the Sand Gnats for the third time in his professional career after starting out the 2007 and 2008 campaigns in the Coastal Empire. He’s hit a combined .199 between his two stints with Savannah (96 games) but did blossom with Rookie-level Kingsport last season. In 30 games for the K-Mets, the Flowood, Miss. native hit .290 with three home runs and 13 RBI. He has played in two games for High-A St. Lucie this season, hitting a home run on Wednesday evening. Gaski, 23, played in 31 games and hit .216 for the Arizona League Padres last season after being drafted by San Diego in the 34th round of the 2008 draft from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. At UNC-Greensboro, Gaski played for his father, Mike, and hit .327 during his final year with the Spartans.

Both Stegall and Gaski will be active for tonight’s game in Asheville versus the Tourists
