Sand Gnats 8, Lexington 7

Jefry Marte doubled in Rafael Fernandez with one down in the 10th to give the Sand Gnats an, 8-7, come-from-behind win over the Lexington Legends Sunday afternoon at Applebee’s Park. Kyle Allen (3-1) worked five innings of relief for the Gnats to earn his third win of the season while Jimmy Johnson registered his second save.

Savannah trailed by as many as four at two different points in this 10-inning contest and was down 7-3 to start the seventh. With two away, Eric Campbell doubled in Fernandez and moved Satin to third to cut the lead to three. Raul Reyes, who singled in the game-tying run yesterday, brought the Gnats within one today as he tripled in Campbell and Satin later in the inning.

In the eighth, the Gnats manufactured the tying run as Satin drove in Jordany Valdespin from third with a sacrifice fly to right. The game would remain tied until Marte’s double in the tenth.

Starting pitcher Eric Beaulac only lasted two innings and permitted two runs on three hits. Michael Powers made his second outings with the Gnats in 2009 and gave up one run on three hits before giving way to Allen. The 19-year-old gave up four runs on six hits in his five innings. All three of Allen’s wins this season have come in relief.

Fernandez was 4-for-5 with three runs scored from the leadoff spot for the Sand Gnats. Satin, Campbell, Reyes and Valdespin all had two hits apiece.

Winners of four straight, the Gnats (21-15) will go for their second four-game sweep of the season tomorrow when they take the field on Education Day. RHP Elvin Ramirez (2-2, 3.41) starts for Savannah in search of his third win while RHP Jordan Lyles (1-4, 4.04) takes the bump looking for win number two. First pitch from Applebee’s Park is scheduled for 10:05 a.m.
