Savannah 6, Asheville 0

Robert Carson, Michael Powers and Chris Schwinden combined to throw Savannah’s third shutout of the season as the Gnats blanked the Asheville Tourists, 6-0, at McCormick Field. Raul Reyes led the Sand Gnats offensive as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI and fell a triple shy of the cycle.
After a heartbreaking defeat Wednesday night the Sand Gnats took a 1-0 lead after one on a RBI groundout by Sean Ratliff. It would be the first of two RBIs for Ratliff, who also singled in Jordany Valdespin in the eighth.
Carson made the big pitches when he had but was forced to throw more pitches that he would have liked in the early innings. It eventually caught up with the Hattiesburg, Miss. native when he was forced to leave after just three innings of work.
Reyes began his offensive output in the fourth when he drove in Ratliff with his two-run home run to dead center field. The Gnats tacked on another run in the frame when Jefry Marte double in Kai Gronauer with two away. After 3.5 innings, the Gnats led it, 4-0.
That would be more than enough for Powers and Schwinden (3-2), who combined for six innings of shutout relief. Schwinden worked five of the six and permitted just three hits while registering six strikeouts.
Every member of the Savannah starting nine had a hit in this game except for the leadoff man Valdespin, who went 0-for-5.
Parker Frazier (1-4) allowed five of the six Savannah runs in 5.2 innings of work for his fourth loss of the season.
