B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

The B-Mets scored the most runs they have since
June 18 last night, but failed to win as New Britain topped
Binghamton 10-7 at New Britain Stadium. The B-Mets cracked
the scoreboard first with a two-out, RBI double from Caleb
Stewart in the first inning. Then in the second, Jonathan Malo
doubled to left to score Emmanuel Garcia, making it 2-0. The
Rock Cats responded with three runs in the bottom of the
frame off Eric Niesen to make it 3-2. New Britain led 4-2 heading
into the fourth when the B-Mets would break out for five
runs including a two-run single from Stewart that broke a 4-4
tie. Stewart went 3-5 with a double and 3 RBIs, his best game
of the year. However, the Rock Cats would respond with two in
the fifth and one in the sixth to tie it up at seven. Then, Rene
Tosoni brought in two men with a single in the seventh inning
off Edgar Alfonzo, who was hung with the loss. Erik Lis put the
finishing touches on things with a solo homer to right in the
eighth off Jim Ed Warden. Niesen went four innings allowing
four runs on six hits with three walks to get a no-decision.
Ryan Mullins, New Britain’s starter, exited after allowing six
runs in 3.2 innings. Anthony Slama held the B-Mets scoreless
in the final two innings for his 19th save in 21 chances.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:

RHP Eric Brown will look to
avoid his sixth straight loss tonight as he makes his 10th start
of the year for the B-Mets tonight. Last time out, July 6 against
Erie, Brown allowed six runs in six innings on nine hits to take
the loss in Binghamton’s 12-4 shortcoming against Erie. On
the year, he is 4-9 with a 5.83 ERA in 78.2 innings. His nine
losses are second-most in the Eastern League. He is 1-7 with
a 6.62 ERA in 9 starts spanning 50.1 innings. Brown worked
as both a starter and as a reliever in 2008 for Binghamton as
well and recorded a 5-8 record with a 5.46 ERA in 17 starts
covering 94 innings. He was the Mets’ 18th-round choice in
2005 out of Wingate University (NC).

RHP Yohan Pino will make his third straight start for the Rock
Cats tonight. He went 5.1 innings allowing a run July 6 at
Trenton to pick up a win in his second start of the year. Pino
opened the season in the bullpen and recorded a 2-1 record
with a 3.89 ERA in 28 appearances in relief. Overall, he is 3-1
with a 3.53 ERA in 51 innings. Pino worked as a starter primarily
last season for New Britain. He started 18 games and
made 8 relief appearances for the Rock Cats in 2008. He
notched a 7-7 mark with a 4.54 ERA in 109 innings. The Venezuelan
righty was signed as a free agent in July 2004.

ALL DUDA DAY:

Thanks to a 1-4 showing last night, Lucas
Duda extended his hitting streak to 10 games. During the
streak, he is hitting .289 (11-38). It’s his second 10-game
hitting streak of the season.
