72 Losses - A Silver Lining

As of the end of last night's game, the Mets record now stands at 58-72.

If the season ended last night, the Mets would be granted the 8th pick in the first round of the 2010 draft.

Also, as of last night, the Mets are tied with three teams (Oakland, Cincy, and Arizona) with 72 losses; however, at this point in the schedule, the Mets have more wins than these three teams.

It's conceivable that the Mets could be in possition for the 5th pick by early this week.

When I did my first mock draft earlier this month, I had the Mets pick at 10th, and chose a good pitcher, RHP Jamison Taillon, but there's a big difference in talent from the 10th to the 8th pick alone, no less the 5th.

On my chart, the 8th pick would get the Mets 2B/OF Levon Washington, who passed on being signed this year after being drafted in the first round. He's easily the top second baseman in the draft, and also plays outfield.

But the 5th pick would snag C Yasmani Grandal, who easily would have been the first catcher chosen in 2010 if Bryce Harper didn't come out early.

Or, the Mets could pick the best bat in the draft, OF Bryce Bentz, who I had ging 7th to Arizona.

Bentz, Washington or Grandal would offer the Mets a future star at positions they desperately need depth.

Remember.... 2010 is not considered a talented draft, so there are only around 10-15 projected "A" prospects in the entire process.

I know we're not supposed to root for losses, but if they continue to happen, there will at least be a little more light at the end of the tunnel.

  1. If the Mets can get up to the 5th pick, I don't see why Harper can't fall to them.. Assuming the Mets are in decent financial shape (a big if), Harper's agent has to be licking his chops considering the $ that can be made between his signing bonus and the marketing frenzy.

Harper will be 17 next June, and he's got levreage; he could go to another year of JUCO Ball, or enroll in a four year school and be drafted at 19. I could see him just telling the other teams in front to lay off.
