B-Mets Game Notes

LAST GAME:

In one of the most well-pitched games of the
year, Reading took advantage of a Binghamton error to walk
off with a 1-0 win. B-Mets starter Eric Niesen tossed five innings
scoreless and allowed only two hits and threw walks,
while striking out eight men. It was the third such start that
Niesen had struck out eight or better. On the flip side, Reading’s
Mike Stutes went seven, shutout innings and allowed
two hits and a walk with a season-best nine strikeouts. Stutes
retired the final 13 men he faced. In the ninth inning, Binghamton
got a man on via walk, Ike Davis, but he was stranded
at second when Shawn Bowman popped out to second. Pitching
into a second inning of relief, Roy Merritt was greeted
rudely by Domonic Brown, who doubled to left-center to reach
scoring position. After a failed bunt attempt by Brian Stavisky,
Merritt intentionally walked Neil Sellers to set up the double
play. Then side-winding righty Emary Frederick came on and
induced a ground ball from Kevin Mahar, but second baseman
Jose Coronado, who gloved it, overthrew Davis at first
allowing Brown to come around from second to score the
winning run. Sergio Escalona was credited with the win thanks
to two scoreless innings of relief after Stutes exited.

STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP GAME 2:

RHP Dylan Owen will
get the call in the second game tonight. In his second-longest
outing of the year August 13, Owen went 7.1 innings but allowed
five earned runs on six hits and struck out six in taking
the loss. He is 4-8 with a 5.42 ERA in 108 innings with the BMets
this year. He carries an 8.39 ERA in 11 home starts
compared to a 2.48 ERA in 9 road starts. Last year, he tied for
the Florida State League-lead with 12 wins with St. Lucie.
Owen was the Mets’ 20th-round pick in 2007 out of Francis
Marion University (SC).

LHP Ryan Mullins is due for his 23rd start of the year tonight
in the second game for New Britain. He tossed seven, scoreless
innings against Erie in his last start August 13. Mullins
allowed eight hits and struck out nine, but drew a no-decision.
He is 8-10 with a 4.12 ERA in 118 innings overall with the
Rock Cats. Mullins leads the Eastern League in strikeouts with
113. This is his third straight season spending time with the
Rock Cats. In 2008, he tallied a 9-9 record with a 4.31 ERA in
148.1 innings allowing 169 hits, fifth-most in the league. He
also allowed 18 home runs, the third-highest total in the Eastern
League. Mullins was a third-round choice by the Twins out
of Vanderbilt in 2005.

RESUMPTION RECOURSE:

The game that was suspended due
to rain last night in the top of the third inning, will resume at
6:05 and will be played as a nine-inning game. However, the
second contest will be seven innings.
