Ruben Tejada collected three hits, including a home run, in the Binghamton Mets 6-2 victory over the Reading Phillies Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. Jose Coronado also struck for three hits in the contest and drove in two runs of insurance in the eighth inning.
Reading struck for two runs in the first inning against Chris Mason, who was making his B-Mets debut. Quintin Berry reached on an error by Coronado to get the inning started. Tim Kennelly followed with a single and Domonic Brown advanced Berry to third with a deep fly to right. Brian Stavisky’s single then brought in Berry and moved Kennelly to second, where he would later score from on a Neil Sellers single.
Tejada hit a leadoff home run for Binghamton in the bottom half of the first off Phillies starter Kyle Drabek to pull the B-Mets within one, at 2-1.
In the third inning, Binghamton (43-68) took the lead for good. After Coronado singled, Duda doubled off the base of the left-center field wall to score Coronado. After Caleb Stewart singled, advancing Duda to third, D.J. Wabick drove him in with a ground-ball double play, putting the B-Mets up 3-2.
Mason ran into trouble in the fifth when he issued a two-out walk and then allowed a single and another walk before being pulled for reliever Jose De La Torre. De La Torre bailed Mason out by inducing a fly out from Stavisky.
In the bottom of the fifth, Wabick singled off Drabek, making it 4-2. He drove in Coronado, who led off the frame with a single.
De La Torre went on to work two scoreless innings, picking up his second win, before being pulled for reliever Roy Merrritt with runners on second and third in the seventh inning. Merritt struck out Brown to end the threat.
In the eighth, Binghamton added two insurance runs off Reading (62-50) reliever Sergio Escalona. Mark Kiger walked and then moved to third on a Tejada double. Coronado followed with a two-run single, stretching the lead to 6-2.
Drabek was pinned with his second loss of the season. He went five innings and allowed four runs on six hits with four walks.
Mason worked 4.2 innings and allowed two runs, one earned.
