Connecticut 9, Binghamton 6

Yesterday, Connecticut’s Mike McBryde led the way with a four-hit day for the Defenders and clearly he remembered to bring that same bat to the park Monday night. McBryde recorded hits in each of his five plate appearances, helping Connecticut to a 9-6 win over the B-Mets at Dodd Stadium. Shawn Bowman led the Binghamton attack with a 2-4 game including a pair of doubles and two runs scored.

Heading into the last of the seventh, Binghamton (48-78) was even with the Defenders at five apiece. Edgar Alfonzo came on for starter Dylan Owen in the frame and promptly allowed a single to Eddie Martinez-Esteve. Mike Mooney pinch ran for Martinez-Esteve and moved to second on a wild pitch. Ramon Castro moved him to third with a sac bunt and Brandon Crawford plated Mooney with a sac fly to center.

Leading 6-5, Connecticut (74-53) would add three more in the frame on a Sharlon Schoop solo homer, a Brock Bond RBI single and a McBryde RBI double to give them a 9-5 advantage heading into the eighth.

The B-Mets mustered a threat in the ninth against Dan Griffin with back-to-back doubles from Bowman and Caleb Stewart, cutting the deficit to 9-6. However, that was as close as it would get. Stewart went 2-4 with a run scored. It was his third straight two-hit game.

Owen gave Binghamton six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. He struck out six for the third straight start.

The Defenders starter Jesse English lasted only three innings and was knocked out of the game in the fourth after he allowed the first four men to reach. The fourth was a three-run inning for the B-Mets, which gave them their only lead of the game 5-4.

Binghamton will open up a brief three-game home stand with the Portland Sea Dogs. The B-Mets have yet to name a starter, but the Sea Dogs have and will throw LHP Felix Doubront (7-5, 3.38). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
