Second baseman Josh Satin went 4-for-4 and fell a triple shy of the cycle in the Gnats, 4-2, win over the Rome Braves Wednesday night at State Mutual Stadium. It is the 12th four-hit game by a Sand Gnat this season and the second of the year for Satin. With Asheville and Bowling Green postponed, Savannah was able to pick up half a game on the first-place Tourists and starts play on Thursday four games back.
Savannah took the early lead after Satin notched a double to tie him for the league lead with 30 in the second. Jean Luc Blaquiere, who also homered in the game, drove in Satin to give the Gnats a, 1-0, lead heading to the bottom of the inning.
Rome answered back and tied it in the third thanks to three wild pitches by starting pitcher Jeurys Familia that brought around Joel Campusano from first after a walk. The 19-year-old right hander would settle down after that and go on to strike out five batters in his four innings of work. Familia (9-6) now leads the team in wins with nine.
Satin would make sure that Familia would be eligible for a win as he homered off 18-year-old Rome starting pitcher Julio Teheran (0-1) with one out in the fourth. Blaquiere followed two batters later with his fifth blast of the year. Sean Ratliff drove in Jefry Marte with two outs in the fifth for the Gnats fourth and final run of the game.
The bullpen kicked itself back into form tonight by pitching four innings of scoreless baseball and allowing just two hits. Lance Hoge worked two innings with a strikeout in his first bullpen appearance as a Sand Gnat while Jake Goldberg bounced back from last night’s outing by striking out the side in the eighth.
Cruz locked it down in the ninth and got Campusano to strike out for the final out of the game. He now has 20 saves on the year to tie him for the league lead.
