Savannah-Brooklyn Roster Moves

Relievers Jake Goldberg and Manny Olivares along with starter/reliever Lance Hoge have been transferred from the Sand Gnats roster to the Brooklyn Cyclones roster, the New York Mets announced earlier today. In exchange for the three arms, the Gnats will receive third baseman Nick Giarraputo and relievers Mike Lynn and Samuel Martinez.

(Mack: this is obviously a "promotion" for Goldberg and Oliveros, who have pitched well... they will help Brooklyn in the playoffs)

Goldberg last pitched in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader versus Delmarva and worked 0.2 innings of scoreless relief. In 25 appearances for the Sand Gnats this season, Goldberg was 1-2 with a 2.89 ERA and one save. He had not allowed a run in his last three outings. Olivares, who was in his second stint with Savannah, pitched a scoreless inning in Friday night’s comeback win over Delmarva at Grayson Stadium. In 2009, Olivares was 2-4 with one save to go along with a 3.77 ERA. The 23-year-old Olivares had been dynamite for the Sand Gnats at home, posting a 1.36 ERA in 18 games this season. Hoge, who was transferred from Brooklyn to Savannah earlier in the year, made three starts and two relief outings for the Sand Gnats. He was 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA and registered 13 strikeouts with no walks in his 16.0 innings as a Sand Gnat. The Stillwell, Kan. native was one of three members of the club from the Mets’ 2009 draft class. Joining Savannah for the second time will be Giarraputo, who played in 56 games in the second half last season for the Sand Gnats. The 21-year-old Giarraputo hit .203 in 34 games for the Cyclones in 2009 with one home run and 13 RBI. He was drafted in the 12th round of the 2006 amateur draft out of Simi Valley High School in California. Martinez, who was with Savannah for a brief three-game stint earlier this year, will join the club for his third tour beginning Monday night. The catcher turned pitcher originally signed with the Mets as a non-drafted free agent in 2006. He made the switch to pitcher last season. Lynn, 24, makes his first appearance in Georgia’s First City after being drafted in the 30th round of the 2008 draft out of the College of Charleston. A teammate of Jake Goldberg in Charleston, Lynn spent four games with the Cyclones in 2008 and recorded a 5.79 ERA and a 0-1 record. This season with Brooklyn, Lynn was 1-1 with a 3.98 ERA. Giarraputo, Lynn and Martinez will all be active for Monday night’s series finale versus Delmarva. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
