The number one right filed prospect, Fernando Martinez, will go on to Queens next season, as a left fielder, who will eventually turn out to be the center fielder after Carlos Beltran’s contract runs out. Martinez’ debut in the major leagues was a lot less spectacular than Josh Thole, and there is still some question regarding what this kid will produce in the majors. My guess: around .280 with 20 home runs tops. Not what everyone expects, but good enough to man one of the three outfield positions.

2009’s helium watch is undrafted Carlos Guzman, who had the fifth highest batting average in the Sally League. The extra bonus was his 15 home runs and sixth leading OPS, and he easily earns a bump to Binghamton.

Cesar Puello continued his growth, Andres Perez impressed in Venezuela, and draft pick ZeErika Hall debuted in Florida with good numbers.

But the most pleasant surprise was “the other” Luis Rivera, an original draft pick of the Angels that was plucked off the waiver wire this year and wound up with the league’s third best on-base percentage.

It was a good season for the Mets when it comes to right fielders.

In Summary:

2010 will be another maturing process for a bunch of Mets minor league outfielders and everyone is quite interested to see if Guzman’s power keeps going up. Highest ceiling goes to Puello, while Perez should show some splash for the GCL team. Still, all the hype still remains with Martinez, and past him, it’s all a work in progress.

One last thing.. Eventually, the Mets will move Wilmer Flores to the outfield, which could change everything.
