The Keepers - #64 - 2B/3B - Matt Gaski

Gaski was drafted in the 34th round of the 2008 draft by the San Diego Padres.

School Bio: 2006: Started 34 games as a sophomore in the infield (28 at second base, five at third base, one at shortstop) for Florida and batted .227 with 14 runs and seven RBI in 47 games played...named to the SEC's Academic Honor Roll for the first time...was second on the Gators with six sacrifice hits...had a .132 (7-for-53) average in 20 SEC contests with three runs and two RBI...drew 14 walks...went 1-for-4 and scored a run in the third game at Mississippi State...had an RBI single in the 8-3 victory at No. 5 Florida State...went 1-for-4 with a walk, RBI and a stolen base in the 15-4 rout of Tennessee...delivered a 2-for-4 effort and had an RBI single against North Florida...was 2-for-3 and scored twice versus USF...went 2-for-4 at UCF, giving him five hits in nine at bats (.556)...was 2-for-2 and had a career-high two RBI in the 12-6 decision over Harvard (3/11)...finished 3-for-6 (.500) versus the Crimson with five walks...turned game-ending double plays in both games against UNCG last March 7 and 8 to secure victories over the Spartans...had one of UF's five hits in the 4-0 loss to Texas A&M (3/3)...earned all-tourney honors at The Pepsi Baseball Classic with a .300 (3-for-10) clip...went a career-high 3-for-5 versus Ohio State...started two of the three games against Cincinnati at third base...Batted 2-for-6 (.333) with four runs and a pair of walks...went 2-for-2 and scored a career-high three runs in his starting debut on Feb. 10...Also walked twice.

In 2008, Gaski played for San Diego’s rookie team and hit .216/.371/.316/.687 in only 79 at bats. The Padres must have not liked what they saw because he was cut, and then picked up by the Meys for the 2009 season.

Gaski first played for Savannah, hitting .389/.421/.444/.865 in only 36 at bats, and was transferred to Brooklyn so he would get some more play time. He did, and batted .291/.371/.316/.687 in 79 at bats.

Forecast:

There’s not much out there on Gaski, which is one of the reasons I made sure I added him to my 100 Keepers. Remember, this is not a ranked prospect list. It’s a list of Mets minor leaguers that have earned themselves another assignment in the spring of 2009.

Gaski has done nothing wrong as a Mets and needs to work himself into a starting lineup somewhere so we can determine just how valuable he is. He plays both second and third base, so there is some flexibility here, though Savannah seems out, what with Alonzo Harris and Jenry Marte projected there.

I would hope Brooklyn gets him back for a full season, though he is a little old to be playing short season.
