Minors Stuff

Binghamton Mets:

(Brahiam) Maldonado will be a minor league free agent next year. Players become free agents after six FULL minor league seasons. Maldonado was the Mets 10th round pick in ‘04, so that year doesn’t count. His full seasons include ‘05, ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, and ‘09. He’ll be a free agent after 2010.

Yeah, you pretty much nailed this one. Hitting .273/.348/.466 at age 23 in the FSL does not make him a top prospect. The 18 HR and 19 2B are nice, but the 126 strikeouts in 122 games while being old for the league suggests that his problems making contact will preclude him from an MLB career. It’s not obvious to me that he’ll make the AA Binghamton affiliate better; pitchers at the next level might just exploit his troubles with contact.

Myworld also broke down our all Dominican team after the regular season ended. This team was selected prior to the round robin of playoffs and it is listed below:

2B - Anderson Hernandez (Licey) - I couldn’t ignore Hernandez who hit .365 and topped the Dominican Winter league in runs scored with 41.

Of - Victor Diaz (Aguilas) - He led the Dominican League in homeruns and RBIs and his .313 average was not too shabby but not good enough to get him the triple crown.

SP - Jorge Sosa (Licey) - In 10 starts he finished tops in ERA (2.53) and wins with six.

The All Puerto Rican team is listed below from last year’s winter league season:

C - Raul Casanova (Caguas) - He was second in the league in RBIs with 34 and he raked with a .307 average and an OPS of 1.033.

SP - Dillon Gee (Ponce) - 2.22 ERA in 10 starts deserves mention. He also finished 4-0.

Last year’s All Mexican myworld team did not have a lot of stars that filled major league holes but Walter Skiva got a major league opportunity and Jorge Vazquez was signed by the Yankees.
RP - He’s not having a good playoff but Tim Lavigne (Guasave) led the regular season in saves with 19. His 1.74 ERA was also solid.

Not sure if big guy Cliffy (Cliff Floyd) is ready to call it a career yet but if he is love to see in a Met uniform again. This time as a coach. Floyd has played ball now since the 93 Season when he got a cup of coffee with the Expos that year. He played 4 years for the Mets from 03 through 06 and he was a fan favorite as well as a club house favorite.

Injuries have slowed the big guy down in 09 where he got only 17 at bats for the Padres before falling to injury. He was a big part of the Rays clubhouse in 08 as they rallied through out the year and the post season.

Cliff finished is Met career in 06 with a strike out in the post season against the Cardinals . He had 81 homers and 268 rbi's for the Mets with a .268 average over those 4 years

Remember how easy it used to be to get a t-shirt that said "In Omar We Trust"? Now they're about as readily available as those Patriots 19-0 gold coins ... and worth about as much. It's gotta be tough to be Minaya these days. He's the very definition of lame duck ... between his people getting fired around him, hiring new people who could possibly replace him (and I wonder whether Minaya was "encouraged" to do this), and having reports pop up that the only reason you have your job is because of the extension you signed, I'd say that would make a man feel quite inadequate. Good thing he's in the sports business, where there's no shortage of advice for that kind of thing. What has Omar Minaya learned? Hopefully, how to choose his battles more wisely.
