Ike Davis (2003 16U National, 2004 18U National, 2009 World Cup) was named the top player in the New York Mets' system. The first baseman/outfielder went from not homering in his first professional season a year ago to clubbing 20 at high-Class A and Double-A Birmingham. Davis wound up hitting .333 in eight games for the United States in the World Cup. He hit three of USA's 38 homers while driving in five runs with 23 total bases.
The New York Mets began the year with hopes of making a deep playoff run. A never-ending stream of injuries prevented that from happening and the Mets won just 70 games, their fewest in any season since 2003.
But is any in-house help on the way?

Project Prospect: Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis received more late-season buzz than any other prospect in the system. How high are you on him?
Toby Hyde: Fairly high. His late-season power surge was very encouraging. He's made a run at being a top ten prospect in the system. He has the tools, specifically the speed and agility for center field, and the bat now looks like it's for real. A year ago, scouts thought he was a fourth outfielder, but now some think a little more highly of him. I don't think it's an impact bat on the corner, but World Series teams have had success recently by playing rangy defenders at two outfield spots and sacrificing a little offense for a lot of defense.

Although I shouldn’t be, I’m enjoying the MLB playoffs this year without the Mets. I think the reason why is because I expected the Mets to be in the playoffs in 2007 and 2008. Obviously, I had no such delusion this season.
Keeping up with other Mets fans has been interesting on my Twitter account. I haven’t seen any of us hoping that the Phillies take the series over Colorado. But I have seen some Mets fans hoping that the Yankees can go all the way.
I just don’t get that… I suppose it’s possible for a casual fan to be a “New York” fan. That’s what I’m attributing it to. But I could never see myself hoping the Yankees get another World Series championship.

It’s amazing to think that 2009 concludes the seventh season that the Mets have had Pedro Feliciano, and I think his work often goes unnoticed. In a year where we certainly had plenty to complain about, Pedro was once again solid as a rock, and he set a Mets’ record for most appearances at 88. It’s simple. He’s old reliable, and it’s time he gets the credit he’s due.
It’s amazing the things this guy does. He allowed a mere seven home runs this year, and he had a nice 3.03 ERA as the lefty specialist. I am sure he gives Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez nightmares, as he seems to face them and win almost every time he’s given the task.My father had the pleasure of meeting him last year at the Hospital for Special Surgery. My father was there because my sister has a bad ankle, and he saw Pedro standing by an elevator. My dad’s first instinct is that something was wrong, so he confronted Pedro about it, but thankfully, Pedro assured my dad that everything was alright.

Now Red Sox pitcher Paul Byrd must determine if, at 38, he can return for another season of major league baseball. "It's too soon to think about what I'm going to do," Byrd said. "I have a lot of decisions to make, and my family will be involved in those decisions. But I can tell you this: Parenthood is the most important thing to me. So we'll see."
