Even before the season ended, speculation grew that Jason Marquis, a New York metro native, would like to play at home for the Mets. Marquis said he isn't anywhere near a decision, and the door is open to a return to the Rockies. "I've enjoyed my time here," Marquis said. "I would love to come back here. Obviously, they've seen how I can pitch in these conditions in this ballpark. The ball's in their court. Every player has a decision he needs to process, but the team has to want you back. Hopefully, I've done enough good things around here to warrant that." Still, an All-Star appearance and double-digit wins in the last six years is a resume that could bring him a big deal elsewhere. "I can talk with the Rockies until I file for free agency," Marquis said. "We'll see if something can be worked out. Time will tell." -- MLB.com
I'm not sure the Mets would agree to a deal for "decent" young players in exchange for Carlos Beltran. And how many clubs are looking to assume a $37 million obligation for two years? Moreover, who plays center field for the Mets? Beyond that, are other clubs sure about his physical condition? The Mets are boxed in. -- MLB.com
Binghamton Mets:
Tim Teufel appears poised to climb the minor-league managing ladder to Double-A Binghamton, while two '86 teammates are nearing returns to the Mets organization. Wally Backman is expected in New York this week to cement a position as a Single-A skipper, while Mookie Wilson also is in serious dialogue about a minor-league role, perhaps as a roving instructor.
John Stearns, a catcher with the Mets from 1975-84, could be back as well. He is set to part with the Nationals after spending four seasons with that organization, most recently as the Double-A Harrisburg manager. The Mets are looking to generate goodwill and interest by bringing back former players.

Ike Davis, 1B, Mets (AFL: Surprise)
Tuesday's stats: 4-for-6, 2 2B, HR (1), 2 R, 6 RBI
Davis' emergence after a nightmarish pro debut was one of the bigger stories in the Mets system, especially during the second half of the season, as he hit .341/.401/.651 after the All-Star break for Double-A Binghamton with 10 home runs in 129 at-bats. He was certainly the player of the day as the Arizona Fall League opened, and whoever plays first base for the Mets next year, it might just be a one-year placeholder in preparation for Davis.

Ike Davis continues to impress kicking off the Arizona Fall League yesterday with four hits and a grand slam. It certainly helped have a contingent of Mets front office personnel in attendance, including GM Omar Minaya. After producing an OPS of .906 in the minor leagues this season (.951 at Binghamton) is Ike Davis ready to play first base in Queens? The Mets need some sort of power bat in their lineup. Matt Holliday and Jason Bay would be perfect, but money, years, health, and age are ominous factors when handing out a long term deal. Can you take this risk? I think you can, but you should have a veteran brought in as insurance i.e. Delgado, Millar, or Chad Tracy. Don’t forget you have Chris Carter as well. Another benefit of this type of plan is that you can take the savings with Davis at first and invest in starting pitching (Lackey) and some bullpen arms. Of course, this only works if you beef up left field with a second tier power hitter. Only time will tell, but Davis is heads and shoulders the best offensive prospect in the system. Wake me up when Fernando Martinez produces a month of the kind of baseball we have seen from Davis this year.

As of right now on the Mets coaching staff has openings for third base coach, first base coach and bench coach.There is some speculation that hitting coach Howard Johnson could move to fill the first base coaching void and could be replaced at hitting coach by former Texas Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, who rejected a one-year deal from the Rangers.You might remember Jaramillo interviewed for the Mets managerial position back in 2004. Jaramillo produced four MVP's while with the Rangers.The Rangers are coming off of a disappointing offensive year, in which Jaramillo said because of young inexperienced players. If you look at 2008, the Rangers led in almost every offensive category under Jaramillo.

News: Reyes to have Surgery Tomorrow - Don't forget children, Jose will be 100% healthy for opening day. He will walk, steal two bases, score a run...all on his way to another MVP and another World Series. A true cornerstone to build around, safely in the fine medical hands of the New York Mets All is well, no need to look closely.
