Hot Stove Target – Update:

2B – Orlando Hudson: -

According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, Orlando Hudson says he hasn't had any contact with the Dodgers since the season ended.
Hudson said he "wouldn't close the door" on a possible return, but that seems highly unlikely after the team soured on him down the stretch. The newly-minted Gold Glove second baseman is a Type A free agent, so expect the Dodgers to offer him arbitration in order to net the two draft picks.

1B – Lyle Overbay: -

According to FOXSports.com, the Mariners have discussed a trade with the Blue Jays about Lyle Overbay.
According to the report, Overbay "would welcome" a deal since he lives in the Pacific Northwest. Overbay is locked in at $7 million next season, but a potential trade doesn't mean that the Mariners wouldn't bring back Russell Branyan, as well. The Blue Jays seem determined to trade Overbay, as his name as been linked to several teams in the past week.

New York Mets

Carlos Beltran appeared in half of the Mets' 162 games last season and played with pain in his right knee before an extended assignment to the disabled list. In 308 at-bats, a good number compromised by the knee, he drove in 48 runs, more than any teammate other than David Wright and Daniel Murphy. But to Beltran, 48 RBIs weren't enough.
Not enough to save the Mets, satisfy him and provide the level of support he regularly has provided for the Harlem RBI program, the primary beneficiary of the Mets center fielder's ongoing philanthropy. Beltran couldn't add to his RBI total after the Mets' season ended, but the end of the season hardly signaled an end to his commitment to Harlem RBI.

Buffalo Bisons:

Fernando Martinez OF (Mets) - Another year that Fernando would like to forget. When you miss significant portions of four seasons in a row because of injuries you start becoming a player that a team can not rely on. His injury history is beginning to make Eric Davis look like an iron man. This year was his perfect opportunity to make an impact with the Mets major league roster decimated by injuries. Fernando had played 45 games in Buffalo and hit .290 with eight homeruns. With the injuries on the roster that deserved a callup. Fernando could only survive 29 games before a right knee injury that required surgery ended his season. When up he only hit .176, so there was no certainity that he would have played all year if his hitting didn’t pick up. So to summarize, in 2006 he missed significant time with a bone bruise in his hand and a knee sprain; in 2007 it was a broken hammate bone; 2008 he had hamstring problems and now 2009 knee surgery. He has always been one of the younger players in the leagues so perhaps his body wasn’t mature enough to take the impact of playing with the older players. Or perhaps he will just always be injury prone. Fernando is on the roster for Escogido but with his injury it would be a surprise to see him play.
The Mets surely could use a young, power-hitting first baseman, but Ike Davis knows the quickest way to Citi Field is by taking things slowly.

"I just try to be calm and slow things down," said Davis, the 18th overall pick in the 2008 Draft. "And right now I'm just slowing everything down a bit and trying to stay relaxed. When people throw hard, you try and speed up. It works against you. I'm trying to have a smooth, quick swing."

Davis employed that game plan Wednesday, hitting his fourth Arizona Fall League homer and driving in four runs, but the Surprise Rafters squandered a late lead in a 9-8 loss to the Mesa Solar Sox

Mets prospect Ike Davis hit his fourth AFL homer and drove in four runs, but Surprise squandered a late lead in a 9-8 loss to Mesa. The former first-round pick has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, with six RBIs in that span. Ryan Kalish slugged a three-run homer and scored the winning run on fellow Red Sox prospect Jose Iglesias' ninth-inning single for the Solar Sox, who have won six straight

Caracas was the first team in the Venezuelan league to score 400 runs and they lead the league in hitting as well. They have the league leading hitter Josh Thole to thank for a lot of that. He doesn’t hit for a lot of pop, but his .414 average is second to none. He’s also walked 17 times against 5 strikeouts so he hasn’t had any issues with making contact. He only played two games last week and went 1 for 4, but he walked twice in each game, extending his walk streak to 5 games in a row.

Lance Broadway is the other starting pitcher with an ERA below four. He also has four relief appearances. Broadway had his worse start of the year in his last start, giving up four runs in a little over five inninngs. He had pitched in relief his two prior experiences. Broadway was a first round pick by the White Sox in 2005. He was traded to the Cubs for catcher Jason Castro.

La Guaria (12-16)
The best starter for the Tiburones has been Chris Mason, who picked up his first win last week with five innings of two run ball

Blogs:

Despite his ill-fated attempt to catch the ball with his crotch in this year's NLDS, Matt Holliday is superior to Jason Bay defensively. You wouldn't evaluate a player's batting skills based on 1 plate appearance and you shouldn't judge a player's defense based on 1 misplay. I've seen the Bay > Holliday myth propagated in a number of places so it's worth addressing. Here are each player's UZR and +/- (in runs saved) for the last 3 seasons combined:
Player UZR +/-
Matt Holliday +29 +22
Jason Bay -43 -17
Additionally, Holliday rated higher than Bay according to the Fans Scouting Report this season. The extent to which Bay sucks defensively is up for debate but it's pretty clear he is below average while Holliday is above average. The end.

Licey 2, Toros 1
Former Major Leaguer Ramon Ortiz allowed two hits over seven shutout innings to win his second straight start as the Tigres edged the Toros. Wily Mo Pena singled in both runs for Licey, while Indians prospect had the lone RBI for the Toros
