There has been a lot of talk leading up in recent weeks that the Mets may be players in the Matt Holliday sweepstakes or to a lesser extent Jason Bay. I would prefer to see Holliday first as he is younger and more solid on defense. However, if it does not work out with the former Cardinal, I am totally behind snapping up Bay. Going back to what I was saying about Lackey, picking up Holliday would create a position of strength. An outfield of Holliday, Beltran, and Francoeur is strong. I think it is safe to assume that the Murphy/Tatis experiment has shown us that this team needs another elite hitter, especially in the outfield.

Sources have informed the Dallas Morning News that the Rangers have hired former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle as their next hitting coach. Hurdle beat out a list of candidates that included former Rangers outfielder Rusty Greer, former A's hitting coach Thad Bosley and former Cubs hitting coach Gerald Perry. He has the tough task of replacing Rudy Jaramillo, who signed a three-year contract with the Cubs in late October.
Pedro Martinez, who is scheduled to pitch Game 6 of the World Series, spoke to the media at Yankee Stadium. Among the topics, Martinez touched on his relationship with the Red Sox fans:
Q. Would it amuse you to hear that every Red Sox fan is rooting for you to beat the Yankees?
PEDRO MARTINEZ: No, it wouldn’t. It wouldn’t surprise me at all. I know that they don’t like the Yankees to win, not even in Nintendo games. (Laughter). And knowing that I am part of Boston, I consider myself a Bostonian, as well, too, I’ve been a Montrealer, a Bostonian, and now a New Yorker, and somehow I might become a Philadelphian now. But I’ve only been there for a short period. It’s something that’s a work in progress, and I’m pretty sure that every Boston fan out there can feel proud that I’m going to try to beat the Yankees, and I’m going to give just the same effort I always did for them. They’re special fans, and they will always have my respect.

According to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com's Twitter page, "Livan Hernandez's agent says his client 'would be interested in returning to the Nationals.'"
Hernandez's agent said the Nationals also like Hernandez.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have been plugging holes after trades for years, but filling the Freddy Sanchez void proved difficult.On Tuesday, the team agreed to acquire second baseman Akinori Iwamura from the Tampa Bay Rays for reliever Jesse Chavez. The deal was first reported by ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney. The Pirates tried to work out an extension with Sanchez before the trade deadline, but after he rejected their overture, the Pirates traded him to the San Francisco Giants. Sanchez just signed a two-year, $12 million deal with San Francisco. Iwamura will earn $4.85 million for 2010, through a club option negotiated in his original contract.
