Winter Leagues:

Caracas Leones(16-6)

. The bat of Josh Thole stays hot. He is hitting .406 and after going hitless his first day of the week, then started another 5 game hitting streak, going 8 for 16 with four runs driven in for the week.

La Guaira (7-14)

La Guaira is last in the league in pitching with Chris Mason having the lowest starter ERA at 4.50. No starter has had six starts except Chris.

Francisco Rodriguez threw a bullpen session in Venezuela on Wednesday as he gears up to play winter ball in his native Venezuela for Tiburones. K-Rod annually plays winter ball, and plans to continue to do so despite signing a three-year, $37 million contract with the Mets last offseason. Rodriguez, 27, went 3-6 with a 3.71 ERA and 35 saves in 42 chances in 2009.

Blogs:
Carlos Delgado played 26 games for the Mets in 2009 before having hip surgery, and it is doubtful that he will return to the Mets in 2010, there are a lot of unanswered questions about his health.

Delgado, along with Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, and David Wright are considered the Mets core players and as everyone knows, three of the four missed significant time in 2009 with no real promise that any or all of them will be healthy for the start of the 2010 season.

According to teammate and close friend, Carlos Beltran, Delgado is interested in playing winter ball to show that he is healthy enough for play, but that will be an uphill battle for him, physically to see if his body can handle the wear and tear, and also to convince the Mets and other teams that he would be a valuable addition to their roster.

I am not sure if fans remember but early this year there was some stories out there that David Spent some time with HoJo around the time of the Super Bowl . They talked shop watched football and maybe did some hitting. Well after a year of Wright hitting 10 homers and having a slugging percentage under .500 for the first time in his career there was talk about Wright hitting up HoJo again. For what I ask? Wright of course puts too much pressure on himself to perform. It was almost like watching A Rod over time in the playoffs and then this year he broke through some how.

According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, right-hander Yusmeiro Petit and left-hander Doug Slaten have been claimed off waivers. Petit, 24, was scooped up by the Mariners. He went 3-10 with a 5.82 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 74/34 K/BB ratio in 17 starts (89 2/3 innings) this season with the D'Backs. As Piecoro notes, Petit has allowed 1.96 HR/9 through 229 1/3 major league innings, tied for the worst rate in MLB history.

Pedro Jaime Martinez, the younger brother of Ramon Martinez, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers back in 1988. The skinny Dominican right-hander was assigned to Rookie-level Great Falls for the 1990 season (once he had turned 18 years old), and he would toss 77 innings with a 3.62 ERA as a starter for the club. The Dodgers liked what they saw from him, and promoted him to High-A for the 1991 season. This was just the first of a rapid series of promotions for Martinez in '91, as he pitched a significant number of innings at three levels, moving up to throw at both Double- and Triple-A. For High-A Bakersfield, Pedro threw 61 1/3 innings with 83 strikeouts and a 2.05 ERA. In Double-A, his ERA was better still, dropping to 1.76, but his strikeouts also fell, to 8.7 K/9. Still, we're talking about a 19-year-old in his second professional season facing hitters that are much older than he is, so it's a forced complaint. Pedro continued showing off his stuff with the move to Triple-A Albuquerque, where his ERA rose to 3.66 and his whiffs fell to 8.0 per nine, but again, he was 19 years old.
Trying to trade Roy Halladay before he potentially walks away as a free agent is a realistic scenario for the Blue Jays. Asked for his gut feeling about Halladay's future on Saturday, Cito Gaston once again reiterated Halladay's wish to play in the postseason. Given Toronto's current situation, making a run at the World Series seems like more of a long-term goal. "My gut is that I think Doc wants to be on a winning team," Gaston said. "He's probably sitting there looking at A.J. [Burnett] out there pitching [for the Yankees in the World Series], knowing that that's where he'd like to be. It's not about money with Doc. It's about him being on a winning team. "I can't speak for Doc, but my gut feeling is if he's here next year with us, then he'll probably leave after next year. Hopefully, if that's the case, then we can get something for him before he leaves." -- BlueJays.com .....Ben's Take: Halladay could wind up with the Rangers, Cardinals, Dodgers, Mets, Red Sox or Cubs.
