Tim Redding:
The Mets announced that they have non-tendered Tim Redding.
(Mack: no surprise here… it has to be pretty embarrassing to be cut as a Mets SP right now… Redding just never did anything that made his signing worth while. Frankly, he would have been cut during the last season if it wasn’t a fact that almost the entire rotation went down… the Mets even tried him out as a reliever, but this was just one, bad sign. Sorry Tim. Nothing personal. His salary in 2009 was $2,250,000.)
Cory Sullivan:
The Mets announced that they have non-tendered Cory Sullivan.
(Cory was a good AAA sign for the Mets and his kiss of death came when he was called to Queens due to all the injuries. Many ballplayers can survive for many years at AAA and make a decent living playing baseball. Sullivan is one of them, but simply isn’t talented enough to make a 25-man big market team, especially one without injuries. He did a nice fill in job this past season and we wish him well. His 2009 salary was $600,000.)
Jeremy Reed:
The Mets announced that they have non-tendered Jeremy Reed.
(another non-surprise of a nice guy… actually, Reed did a wonderful defensive job in CitiField during the increased body count inside Willets Point. He has the talent to play utility in the majors and I expect him to sign with a small market team .His salary in 2009 was $925,000, which is simply too much for a 6th outfielder.
Lance Broadway:
The Mets announced that they have non-tendered Lance Broadway.
(Mack – this one is a little bit of a surprise to me. Broadway was a past first rounder that came around in the last month of the year for Buffalo. He also pitched very well in winter ball this season. One of the reason he may not be back is the projected rotation of Buffalo is already full with: Dillon Gee, Mike Antonini, Nelson Figueroa, Eric Niesen, and Ryan Coultas. There’s always a chance he could be invited to ST if no one sign him, especially if Figgy projects out for Queens (okay… calm down… don’t send that comment… ) Real nice guy that I thought was a great sign to take a chance on. 2009 salary was $402,500.)
Ruben Gotay:
The St. Louis Cardinals signed 3B Ruben Gotay to a minor league contract.
(Mack – boy, did a bunch of us weenies have big plans for this guy a few years ago. I remember the threads at nyfs all were anti-Mets when they let this guy slip through the cracks. Boy, was this going to come back at the team. Never happened. Just an organizational guy from the get-go.)
Why is Nelson Figueroa in your projected rotation at Buffalo: "Dillon Gee, Mike Antonini, Nelson Figueroa, Eric Niesen, and Ryan Coultas"?
ReplyDeleteIs it because of his 4.1 shutout innings against the Cardinals in long relief when Niese was hurt? That was the game Figgy hit a 2-run triple.
Or is it because of his performance after he took Santana's spot in the starting rotation in mid-August? After all, he was only 2-6. It probably doesn't matter that the Mets scored a total of 11 runs in his six losses. Or that in his 8 starts his ERA was 3.38.
Or is it because if you take away one bad start, in 7 of those 8 games he had a 2.23 ERA?
Or is it because he averaged over 6 innings per start, pitching into the 7th inning?
Or maybe because he averaged over 105 pitches per game?
I know why! It's because he was the only Mets pitcher to throw a complete game shut out at Citi Field.
Or maybe because he had more strikeouts in September than any Mets pitcher?
You're right. Why would Jeff Wilpon offer a Mets contract to a pitcher on his 40-man roster who can start as well as pitch in long relief and short relief and has proven he can be an innings-eater?
So what if in his August-September postgame interviews he made it clear thay he'd like to pitch for the Mets in 2010 and beyond?
My advice? Sign him to a 2010 Mets contract with performance bonuses and an option for 2011 and let him try to make the starting rotation for the Mets. Let's see who pitches better in Spring Training: Figueroa or Perez or Maine or Niese.
good post...

No, I have Figgy there because:
1. you need a seasoned SP1 at AAA
2. Fernando Nieve hasn't fully healed yet.
3. It keeps his wife happy...
