3-19: Minor Stuff

Spring Training:

-Thursday night's lineup at Florida looked an awful lot like what the Mets will look like on opening day... the only exception might be that C Henry Blanco was only used because Oliver Perez pitched....

-Ollie got off to a shaky start... gave up three hits in the first inning while giving up one earned run... he gave up another run in the third and I began to realize that he had pitched nine innings so far this spring and only has one strikeout...

-The Mets regulars left the bats on the team bus... in fact, Ricky Nolasco pitched four perfect innings, with seven strikouts... Jason Bay finally stopped the madness, with a single in the fourth inning... Jeff Francoeur followed that with his first yard-ball of ST, and we had a ballgame going on...

-Francisco Rodriquez did give up two hits, but pitched another scoreless inning, keeping his ST ERA at 0.00...

Buffalo:

Joel Sherman of the NY Post wrote this morning on CF Fernando Martinez. He too agrees that F-Mart could easily be part of a package deal come May for an SP2. He also is convinced Martinez will start the season in Buffalo, regardless of how he hits this spring. I still ain't totally on th bandwagon yet... give me 450 at bats this year at AAA without a boo boo, and then you ain't no Alex Escobar...

Rotoworld reported that Jerry Manuel has named Alex Cora as the short-term replacement for Jose Ryes, not Ruben Tejada.  He also said that Tejada WILL go to Queens on opening day as the back-up.  Look for either Russ Adams or Jonathan Malo to start at second for the Bisons, and Andy Green or Alejandro Mechado start at short... if all those guys are still around...

Binghamton:

as of right now, P Jenrry Mejia is still slated to start the season for the B-Mets, not the Queens-Mets. He is, obviously, being stretched down to an 8th inning guy and might even be used as the B-Mets closer this upcoming season. If it works, and the Mets are still in the race come June, look for him to catch a plane... or, watch for him to be packaged for an SP2 in May... or, maybe Jerry will convince Omar (err... Jeff) to take him nother April 1st...  news at 11...

well, it didn't take long...  I leave the house for two hours so i can scout a high school player, and Rotoworld writes :

Mets manager Jerry Manuel said prospect right-hander Jenrry Mejia would not start the season as the eighth inning man. Instead, he would be eased into the role, according to Manuel. Besides the fact that designated eighth-inning roles are pretty meaningless, it doesn't make a lot of sense to toy around with Mejia if he could be stretched out as a starter in the minor leagues. Whatever the Mets decide, they must do it fast or it could affect Mejia's progress this season.

-so, the way I read this is... he will go to Binghamton, begin the season as a starter there... and then be turned into an 8th inning dude... all after being turned into an 8th inning dude last game... ???  I'm confused...

Tidewater:

          -err... no

St. Lucie:

-I've been advised by one of the Mets bloggers that the reports of SP Jeurys Familia "hitting 100" were grossly exaggerated... if one of you beat reporters out there read this, and it's not accurate, please let me know...thanks

Savannah:

-a possible sneak peek at some of the 2010 ads to the roster... pitchers Cole Abbott, Eduardo Aldama, John Holdzkom, Marcos Tabata, and Zach Von Tersch.

                    - Keeper #84. Marcos Tabata – RP – Rookie - 23/yrs. –

Tabata has been around for awhile. The 23-year old went 4-3, 3.08, in 11 games, six starts, in 2006, for the VSL Mets. He came stateside in 2007, pitching for Kingsport (3-3, 7.49, in 13 games), and wound up on the DL for the end of the 2007 season and the entire year of 2008.

He finally has resurfaced this year on the GCL Mets and has done a commendable job in relief. His stats were consistent throughout the year and were impressive: 0-1, 2.63, 13 appearances, 23-K, 24.0-IP, 8-BB.

On July 11, he combined with Sal Aguilar and Jhonathan Torrez and pitched a no-hitter against the GCL Nationals.

Tabata actually got a late, late minute promotion to Savannah, where he’ll probably play 2010. He pitched in two games, through three innings, and gave up one earned run. His combined 2009 stats came in at 0-1, 2.67, in 15 appearances.

Forecast (written in 9-09): Tabata has some grey hairs for someone at the GCL level and needs to move fast if he wants to stay within his window. Obviously, he has earned one more shot, hopefully as high as Savannah, in 2010. We all know how hard it is to excel level to level when you are a starter, but it’s actually tougher as a reliever. Anybody who ERA’s a season under 3.99 gets another shot the following year and Tabata has earned his.

VSL Mets:

-there are no more VSL Mets… instead, the Mets will have two teams in the DSL league…

Ex-Minors:

-P Octavio Dotel got back into the White Sox lineup, throwing 26 pitches. Dotel was on the shelf with a strained oblique muscle (ouch!)... I still wish the Mets had kept this kid... was signed by the New York Mets as an amateur free agent in 1993... 12-23-99: was traded with Roger Cedeno and  Kyle Kessel to the Houston Astros for Mike Hampton and Derek Bell.
