B-Mets Offense Explodes in Spring Training Victory

The Binghamton Mets remained undefeated through their first two games of the young Spring Training scheduled with a 12-6 victory over the Springfield Cardinals in Jupiter, Florida on Saturday afternoon.

The Mets got on the board in the first inning when Third Baseman Zach Lutz drove in Emmanuel Garcia with a single before the first out was recorded. Binghamton would add three more runs in the second inning when Garcia drove Jose Coronado home with a double to the wall. Outfielder Sean Ratliff’s two-run home run followed shortly after. Things stayed pretty quiet for the Mets offense until the sixth inning. Garcia reached base after an error by the pitcher. Garcia was able to move to second with a stolen base and subsequently onto third when Ratliff reached on an error by the second baseman. Shawn Bowman would bring Garcia home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.

But the B-Mets were not done yet. Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off the inning with a walk and was brought home by a Carlos Guzman double. A walk to infielder Ray VanGurp followed by a Luis Rivera hit by pitch set the table for Catcher Juan Centeno who responded with a double, bringing home all base runners for the Mets. Centeno would be brought in by a Ratliff single, his third RBI of the game. One more run in the eight inning would seal the victory for Binghamton.

Eric Niesen threw three strong innings for the B-Mets allowing three singles in the third inning that lead to the only run he would surrender in the outing. Nicholas Waechter allowed two hits in a scoreless fourth inning while Jake Ruckle allowed only a single in two innings of work. Roy Merritt and Stephen Clyne had rough outings to finish the game. In two innings of work Merritt surrendered three hits including a two run home run in the seventh. He would also allow two singles in the eight that did not produce a run. Clyne’s ninth inning included a lead-off triple, two singles and a hit batsman that led to three runs on three hits. All five Mets pitchers recorded a strikeout a piece.

The B-Mets have a camp day tomorrow and will return to the diamond on Monday to play the same Springfield Cardinals at 1pm.
