down to a battle of the bullpens and the B-Mets once again
came out on top with a 4-3 victory. Both team’s starters exited
in the sixth inning. Dylan Owen tossed 5.1 innings and allowed
three runs in a spot start for Eric Niesen. For the SeaWolves,
Andy Oliver hurled 5.2 innings and allowed three runs as well.
The B-Mets broke the 3-3 deadlock in the seventh inning
when Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered to right off reliever Jared
Gayhart with two outs in the frame. It was the centerfielder’s
third bomb of the year. Derrick Ellison proved to be the winner
with 2.1 innings of shutout work. Roy Merritt secured the win
with his third save in four chances with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Nick Evans, in his second game back from a strained right
oblique, went 2-3 with a solo homer of his own and two RBI.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Brad Holt is due for his
third start of the year. He missed his first three turns in the
rotation while on the disabled list with a right wrist injury. Holt
allowed five runs in a short, third-of-an-inning start at Akron
April 30. He is 0-1 with a 23.14 ERA in 2.1 innings. Last season,
he made 11 starts for Binghamton and struggled with a 3
-6 record and a 6.21 ERA in 58 innings. He is considered the
No. 5 prospect in the Mets system by Baseball America. Holt
was drafted by the Mets as a first round supplemental pick in
2008, going 33rd overall out of UNC-Wilmington.
LHP Jon Kibler will make his team-leading sixth start for Erie
tonight. Last time out, the southpaw recorded a no-decision
with 5.2 innings of work versus Trenton April 30. He allowed
four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. On the year,
Kibler is 2-2 with a 3.26 ERA in 30.1 innings. Last season, he
spent the year with Erie and notched a 6-9 mark with a 4.06
ERA over 27 starts spanning 161.2 innings. He tied for first
the Eastern League in starts, led the league in complete
games (3) and was third in innings pitched. He was the Tigers
30th round pick in 2007 out of Michigan State.
GRADING GUZMAN: Outfielder Carlos Guzman got off to a slow
start in 2010 and was out of commission for a week’s time
with a right knee strain April 19-26. Since coming off the Disabled
List he is hitting .385 (10-26) and has recorded hits in
six straight games.
WINNING WAYS CONTINUE: The B-Mets have had two lengthy
winning streaks so far in 2010. Binghamton won five straight
contests April 12-16 and is in the midst of a six-game streak
entering play tonight. The current stretch of wins is the longest
string of victories since the B-Mets won six in a row May 11-17
in the 2008 campaign. At no point last year did Binghamton
win greater than three consecutive games.
