5/5/10

DRAFT: - Yordy Cabrera, Mitchell Taylor, Leo Aguirre, Matt Szczur... and Kevin Gausman

Yordy Cabrera:

5-1 from: - http://www.minorleagueball.com/2010/4/30/1452668/interesting-high-school-hitters#storyjump  - Yordy Cabrera, SS-RHP, Lakeland High School, ,Lakeland, Florida - Blessed with all-around tools, Cabrera is a prospect as both hitter and pitcher, but is a bit older than most preps and turns 20 in October. He has good size at 6-3, 220 pounds, with strong power potential and decent enough speed. Opinions were previously mixed on his ability to stay at shortstop, but a decline in range this spring makes it very likely he'll shift to third base or outfield. As a result, his stock has dropped slightly, though he remains a candidate for the later part of the first round. A team with extra picks and a liking for raw tools such as the Angels could be interested, as well as the homestate Rays at slot 31. He has a University of Miami commitment but should be signable in the first two rounds.

Mitchell Taylor:

4-30 from: - http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/4/30/1451211/casing-the-states-texas-part-four#storyjump  - LHP Taylor is part of an emerging high school left-handed pitching class that was rated as weak coming into the season. Though the class still lacks high-end arms from the left side, pitchers such as Taylor have added depth in the class, and teams will have plenty of left-handed arms to choose from early in the second day of the draft. Taylor himself has seen a rise in draft stock that is the result of consistently better stuff and command than where he stood after the fall. Though he doesn't have a tall pro body, he has some projection left in his 6'1'' frame, and scouts generally aren't scared off from his size. His pitch mix is solid, and most consider him a starter in the future. His fastball has bumped up a little to sitting 87-89, touching 90-91 at times, making it a solid-average pitch from the left side. He commands it rather well, and he's not afraid to attack hitters with it. He complements the fastball with a solid-average curveball and an advanced changeup for a prep arm, and the result is a likely #4 starter from the left-hand side. He's made a big step forward, but he still does have a college scholarship to Houston that might be a problem given his actual draft range for talent. He's a name to watch, though, as he could be a top ten prep left-hander taken. Projected Draft Range: 6th-12th Round

Leo Aguirre:

http://thecollegebaseballblog.com/2010/05/03/wac-players-of-the-week-10  - New Mexico State’s Leo Aguirre has been named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Baseball Hitter of the Week for April 26-May 2. Aguirre, a senior first baseman from Austin, Texas (James Bowie HS), hit .588 (10-for-17), helping the Aggies to a four-game series sweep over Louisiana Tech. Aguirre tallied 13 RBI, seven runs, four home runs and a pair of walks over four games last week. Aguirre also recorded a 1.294 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage with his four home runs, one of which was a grand slam. Aguirre now has 11 home runs on the season and leads the WAC with a .419 batting average.

Matt Szczur:

5-4 from: - http://collegebaseball360.com/2010/05/03/villanovas-szczur-to-donate-bone-marrow  - Right fielder Matt Szczur was not available to play during the Villanova baseball three-game series against Georgetown last weekend at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. Szczur has begun taking medication in preparation for a bone marrow donation in the near future. On the baseball diamond this spring, Szczur (click link to listen to a podcast interview with Szczur) is batting a team-best .435 in 36 games. He has been the team’s best all-around offensive player and leads Villanova in on-base percentage (.483), slugging percentage (.634), doubles (11), triples (6) and home runs (3). He hit for the cycle last week in Villanova’s 17-10 win over Temple.

Kevin Gausman:

5-4 from: - http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/MLB_Draft   - We've talked about Gausman before, when it was early in the season and Gausman, like a lot of Northern state players, was still getting stretched out. Well, a month and a half into the season and Gausman is hitting his stride. While he's sporting a modest 3-2 record with an equally modest 4.32 ERA, his last two starts have been eye opening. On April 26, Gausman threw a complete-game win with 16 strikeouts, walking none. This past Saturday, Gausman went the distance again, striking out 11 and walking only one. On the season, Gausman has a ridiculous 49 K/5 BB ratio
