Brooklyn 9, Aberdeen 3

Seven-run fifth helps Brooklyn to a 9-3 win

It took nearly five innings for the Cyclones’ bats to wake up, but when they did, they did in a big way. Brooklyn batted around in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs off of Aberdeen pitching, helping to put the game away early and earn the New York-Penn League victory,

The seven-run fifth inning was started by outfielder R.J. Harris, who doubled to centerfield and advanced to third on a fielding error with one out. The rest of the lineup followed with three singles and two walks in the big rally, and took advantage of an error and a wild pitch to bury the IronBirds early.

Centerfielder Darrell Ceciliani had a two-RBI single in the inning, and Jeff Flagg, J.B. Brown and Taylor Freeman each drove in a run in the fifth.

Aberdeen responded with three runs in the sixth, cutting the lead to 7-3, but the IronBirds just could not come back after digging such a big hole.

Brown hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, scoring Ceciliani, and shortstop Rylan Sandoval scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kurt Steinhauer in the eighth, extending the Cyclones’ lead to 9-3, and securing the win for the Coney Island team.

Brooklyn starter Mitch Houck pitched five scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and a walk while striking out three. The lefty, who was the Mets’ 17th round draft pick in 2008, was making his 2010 debut.

Reliever Brian Needham was touched up for three runs in his one-inning appearance, but Hamilton Bennett and Guillaume Leduc combined for two hitless innings in the eighth and ninth.

The Cyclones improve to 4-1 and are back in action tomorrow night at Hudson Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
