Mets Sign RHP Ramon Ortiz to Minor League Deal


World Series Champion and 10-Year Major League Veteran


to Start for Bisons TONIGHT in Gwinnett


The New York Mets today announced that they have signed RHP RAMON ORTIZ to a minor league deal and assigned him to the Buffalo Bisons. Ortiz will start for the Bisons TONIGHT against the Gwinnett Braves (7:05 p.m.).


Ortiz, 37, has a career record of 85-82 with a 4.93ERA in 274 major league games (212 starts) with Anaheim, Cincinnati, Washington, Minnesota, Colorado and most recently the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made his debut with the Angels in 1999 and spent the next six seasons with Anaheim. That time included a 15-9 record during the 2002 season as the Angels won a World Series Championship. Ortiz started and won Game 3 of the Series with five innings of work against the San Francisco Giants.


In 2003, Ortiz posted a career-high 16 wins in 32 games for the Angels. The righty has posted 10 or more wins in a season four times during his career, most recently in 2006 with the Nationals (11-16 record). Ortiz has started 30 games or more in a season five times in his career.


In 2010, Ortiz received an invite to spring camp with the Dodgers and made Los Angeles Opening Day roster. In 16 games and two starts, Ortiz was 1-2 with a 6.30ERA in 30.0 innings of work (33H, 22R, 21ER, 16BB, 21K). He was designed for assignment on May 27 and released on June 3.
