Trying to Make Sense Out of the Ramon Ortiz Signing:

I’m writing this before any official announcement of the promotions coming out of Savannah. I thought I had most of this figured out, but now I’m going to have to wait to see what the heck is going on.


If the reports I have received are correct, and Mark Cohoon is reporting the Binghamton, while Brandon Moore will report to St. Lucie, there simply is a major logjam on the starting rotations of the Mets top three minor league affiliates.


Right now, here they are:


AAA-Bufallo: - Pat Misch (3.49), Ramon Ortiz (new), Dillon Gee (4.73), Tobi Stoner (5.16), Bobby Livingston (5.01), and Dylan Owen (6.39).


AA – Binghamton: - Cohoon (new), Eric Niesen (2.94), Mike Antonini (4.11), Josh Stinson (2.59), Scott Shaw (6.93), Chris Schwinden (5.63), and Jenrry Mejia (new).


A+ - St. Lucie: - Moore (new) – Kyle Allen (4.76), Robert Carson (4.52), Scott Moviel (6.34), Eric Beaulac (3.63), Jeurys Familia (6.16), and Brad Holt (9.00).


That’s 15 slots, and 20 pitchers.


I had hoped that Antonini would be moving to Buffalo, but that probably won’t happen now. The only move that seems obvious is the return of Shaw to the B-Met pen, but what will be the other four moves.


I just don’t understand the Ortiz move. Why continue to keep signing pitchers like this? And, I didn’t even add John Maine to this discussion.


There are at least 15 names listed above that are part of the Mets future structure and they have to keep pitching to possibly develop into a major league pitcher. That being said, the only move so far today is the signing of a re-tread.


There simply has to be a trade in the making.
