Chris Schwinden worked 5 2/3 innings and left with a one-run lead, but the bullpen could not hold it as the B-Mets dropped an 8-2 decision to Erie at Jerry Uht Park Thursday night. Schwinden garnered a no-decision despite limiting the Sea Wolves to two runs with a season-best eight strikeouts.
Erie (43-63) climbed on top in the second inning. Schwinden hit Rawley Bishop with a pitch to start. Deik Scram followed with a single to center, advancing Bishop to third, where he scored from when Billy Nowlin hit into a 6-4-3 double play, making it 1-0 SeaWolves.
Binghamton (53-53) answered promptly in the third off starter Duane Below. Jose Coronado stung a double off the wall in right-center to start the inning. With two outs, Nick Evans evened the score with a double to the wall in center, plating Coronado. Josh Satin followed and vaulted the B-Mets into a 2-1 lead with the inning’s third double, a ground-rule two-bagger to right-center.
Below exited on the losing end in the sixth, having tied a season-high with 5 2/3 innings of work. He allowed two runs on six hits and struck out seven.
The SeaWolves spared Below the loss in the sixth, however. With one out, Nowlin reached on a single and was joined on base by Kody Kaiser who worked a walk. After Schwinden struck out Jeff Kunkel for a third time, the starter was pulled in favor of Eddie Kunz. Kunz gave up an RBI single to Bryan Pounds on the first pitch he threw, tying the score.
The SeaWolves grabbed the upper hand in the seventh. Kunz gave up a leadoff double to Brandon Douglas. He managed to secure the next two outs, but was removed before facing Deik Scram, a left-handed hitter. Eric Niesen entered and walked Scram, putting two on for Nowlin, who smacked a three-run homer to left-center, putting Erie ahead for good, 5-2. Kaiser followed with a homer of his own to up the lead to four.
Bishop put the finishing touches on the run-scoring in the eighth with a two-run blast to left, his fifth homer with the SeaWolves. In total, Niesen was harassed for five runs on five hits over 1 1/3 innings, but Kunz took the loss and was also harnessed with a blown save. The sinkerballer gave up a run on two hits to take his sixth loss.
Satin and Brahiam Maldonado both finished with two-hit days featuring doubles. Binghamton was outhit 15-7 by Erie.
