The Brooklyn Cyclones coughed up a 10-run lead on the 4th of July, as the Jamestown Jammers provided the fireworks in a 13-12 comeback victory at Russell Diethrick Park.
Wally Backman’s team seemed to be cruising to any easy win Sunday night, when they were leading 12-2 after the top of sixth inning. Starter Chris Hilliard, who pitched 5.1 innings, was in line for the victory until he let up four consecutive hits to start the bottom half of the sixth. The lefty managed to get one batter out, before the Cyclones called upon Daniel Carela, who finished the inning, but not before allowing another run to score on a wild pitch, allowing the Jammers to cut the lead to 12-5 after the sixth.
The historic Jamestown comeback resumed in the eighth, when the Jammers sent 11 batters to the plate during a seven-run rally, closing the gap entirely and tying the game, 12-12. Hunter Carnevale was responsible for the bulk of the scoring, giving up five earned runs, while not recording an out. Jonathan Kountis and Hamilton Bennett also gave up one run apiece in the inning. The left-handed Bennett was charged with a blown save and loss, as his runner scored when Johan Figuereo allowed the game-winning single to Alfredo Lopez of the Jammers in the ninth.
It was a setback for the Cyclones, who stand at 9-8 and in second place in the McNamara Division, but the offense had another impressive night. Darrell Ceciliani, Cory Vaughn and Jeff Flagg all contributed three hits, while Vaughn drove in two, and Flagg plated three. Catcher Juan Centeno, shortstop Rylan Sandoval, and Will Cherry all had two hits apiece. Ceciliani continues to rack up the extra-base hits. The lefty-hitting centerfielder had a double and a triple, and is now slugging .642, with an OPS of 1.094.
The Coney Island team continues a three-game set with Jamestown tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m., with left-hander Angel Cuan on the hill.
