Portland 5, Binghamton 3

from press release

Poor baserunning and fielding miscues doomed Binghamton in the opener of a five-game set with Portland, leading to a 5-3 loss at NYSEG Stadium Thursday night. Sean Ratliff was the bright spot with a 3-for-5 showing, highlighted by his sixth home run.

Binghamton (41-38) tallied first courtesy off a no-doubt blast from Ratliff off Sea Dogs starter Casey Kelly. With the bases empty, Ratliff deposited an 0-1 fastball from the right-hander over the wall in right-center, pitting the B-Mets a 1-0 advantage.

Portland (40-38) responded the next half inning. After the first two hitters reached against starter Mark Cohoon, Yamaico Navarro hit a double-play ball to short. Jose Coronado fed second baseman Josh Satin at second to get the lead runner, but Satin overshot Marshall Hubbard at first, sending the throw into the first base seats, allowing the Sea Dogs to tie the score.

Kelly suffered a command hiccup in the third, walking Kirk Nieuwenhuis with one out. Ratliff pushed Nieuwenhuis to third with a high chopper threw the right side to reach. Nick Evans vaulted Binghamton back into the lead with a clean single to right, making it 2-1.

Raul Reyes upped the lead to two in the fourth with a solo jack off the scoreboard in right, his fourth homer over eight games in a B-Mets uniform.

Cohoon departed to a no-decision after five innings. The southpaw allowed three runs — one earned — on five hits and struck out four.

Eddie Kunz, who spelled Cohoon, suffered a command meltdown in the seventh following a 1-2-3 sixth inning. With one out, Kunz walked Vazquez and then hit Sheely to put two men aboard. Back-to-back wild pitches with Lin at the plate yielded the go-ahead run and Lin drove in the final run of the game with a single to right, putting Portland in control 5-3. Kunz was charged with the loss.
