Zach Lutz blasted a pair of homers and drove in half of the B-Mets runs as Binghamton salvaged the final game of a four-game set 8-3 at Jerry Uht Park Sunday afternoon. Josh Stinson picked up his ninth win after hurling 6 2/3 innings of two-run work. The B-Mets are now 12-0 in games started by Stinson.
Binghamton (54-55) climbed on top in the third. Jon Malo singled off Brayan Villarreal to start the frame. Jose Coronado advanced the runner to second with a sacrifice and two batters later Kirk Nieuwenhuis plated Malo with an RBI double to left, making it 1-0 B-Mets.
Lutz upped the lead to two in the fourth with his 12th homer of the season, a solo shot to left on a hanging 2-2 slider from Villarreal.
After four scoreless innings, Erie (45-64) finally managed a run off Stinson in the fifth. Kody Kaiser and Deik Scram reached on back-to-back singles with one out. With two down, Alden Carrithers lined a single to right, plating Kaiser to cut the lead down to one, 2-1.
Villarreal exited after six innings on the hook, despite limiting Binghamton to two runs on five hits.
Luis Marte took over and got in trouble loading the bases with two outs after issuing consecutive walks. Marshall Hubbard worked the count full before drawing a third straight walk from the reliever, pushing Binghamton’s third run across.
The SeaWolves knocked Stinson out of the game in the seventh. After recording the first two outs in short order, the right-hander walked Bryan Pounds. Jeff Kunkel followed and hit a tough comebacker to the mound, which Stinson bobbled but flipped to first, however, Hubbard dropped the feed allowing Kunkel to reach. Manuel Alvarez replaced the starter and gave up a single to Carrithers, bringing Erie back within a run, 3-2.
Stinson allowed two runs — one earned — on five hits and was credited with his team-leading ninth win of the season.
The B-Mets put the game out of reach in the eighth with a five-run outburst against Marte and Jose Ortega. Brahiam Maldonado led off the inning with a mammoth blast to center, his eighth shot of the season. Marte then walked Malo leading to Coronado, who again sacrificed the runner up to second. Josh Satin plated Malo with a clean single to center, pushing the lead to three, 5-2. Marte exited in favor of Ortega after issuing a walk to Nieuwenhuis. Ortega struck out Sean Ratliff for the second out, but served up Lutz’s second homer following the punchout, a three-run homer, making it 8-2.
Andy Dirks added his 11th homer of the season leading off the eighth, providing the final margin of 8-3.
Alvarez struck out a season-best five men over 2 1/3 innings to notch his fifth save in as many chances.
Satin went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Unfortunately, Coronado and Ratliff saw their hitting streaks end at six games with hitless days.
