Ruben Tejada:
link - I don’t want to rip Ruben Tejada, as he had no business being in the major leagues as a 20 year old. He was overpromoted after injuries to Castillo and Jose Reyes forced the Mets to carry an extra middle infielder while Cora was forced into a starting role, which says more about the Mets’ depth issues in Buffalo than it does about Tejada’s own talents. Still, it’s worth pointing out that Tejada has outhit Cora on the season with a .211/.297/.250/.547 line, though when there are several pitchers in the National League who have outhit Cora, I’m not sure if that’s anything worth bragging about.
F-Mart:
link - The 21-year-old outfielder put up an impressive .877 OPS over nearly 200 plate appearances in Triple-A last season, but as all Met fans would love to forget, Fernando Martinez struggled when he got his first taste of the majors, hitting an abysmal .172 with one home run and eight RBI in 100 plate appearances. Although he struggled in 2009, and despite his struggles in Triple-A this season, the Mets should give Martinez another chance. But what a difference a week makes, as Martinez has been on fire, going 9-for-18 with two doubles and two home runs over that time. So while Jason Bay is on the disabled list, instead of marching Jeff Francoeur out there every day, the Mets should start their prized prospect in left field. He is not going to start next season if Carlos Beltran and Angel Pagan are still around, so now is the time. Don't be surprised if once again the Mets make the wrong decision and keep Martinez in the minors for the remainder of the season, because as we've grown accustomed to seeing, the Mets organization just never does the right thing.
Carlos Beltran:
link - Beltran bombed home run after home run to beat the Braves in the 2004 NLDS and that carried over into the next season, when he beat John Smoltz's 15-strikeout effort in a classic pitching duel with Pedro Martinez, with a home run that gave then-manager Willie Randolph his first win. In all, Beltran has a .310 batting average and 15 home runs for his Mets career against the Braves. His nine homers and 19 RBI in 12 games in 2006 are the most by a Met against the Braves in a single season.
Wilmer Flores:
link - Wilmer Flores, SS, Grade B+: .291/.335/.432 for Low-A Savannah and High-A St. Lucie. He doesn't turn 19 until tomorrow...made huge progress this year.
Carlos Delgado:
link - According to a source with knowledge of their thinking, the Red Sox plan to work out veteran first baseman Carlos Delgado in the next couple of days to see if he could be a possible left-handed complement to Mike Lowell at first base. Delgado has not played all season after unergoing surgery last year with the Mets. The former Blue Jays star has 473 home runs, and has drawn interest from a handful of clubs.
