Cohoon, Mejia Toss Gems, B-Mets Sweep ‘Cats in Twin Bill

Mark Cohoon and Jenrry Mejia tossed complete games to send Binghamton past New Britain 8-1 and 7-0 in a pair of seven-inning contests Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Cohoon hurled Game One and allowed a run on five hits with eight strikeouts for his third straight win. Mejia dazzled in the nightcap with a shutout in which he faced three over the minimum. The 20-year-old phenom has now strung together 17 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

Binghamton (62-65) poured it on Rock Cats’ starter Chris Province early and often in the first game. Jordany Valdespin doubled to center with one out. Josh Satin advanced him to third with an infield single to short. With Sean Ratliff at the plate, Valdespin came home to score on a wild pitch from the right-hander. Ratliff proceeded to walk, joining Satin on base. Zach Lutz then chased home Satin with a bloop double to right, upping the lead to 2-0. Marshall Hubbard brought the lead to three with a sac fly to center and Eric Campbell and Brahiam Maldonado followed with back-to-back RBI singles, pitting the B-Mets a 5-0 advantage.

The lead grew to eight in the second inning. Jose Coronado and Valdespin singled to start the frame. After Satin struck out, Ratliff laced the first pitch he saw from Province out of the yard to left for his 16th homer of the season, making it 8-0.
Cohoon’s only blemish came in third as he allowed three straight singles to the top three hitters in the New Britain (38-91) order. He would face one over the minimum the rest of the way. The southpaw retired the final eight hitters in order to nail down his fourth complete game of the season between Savannah (Low-A) and Binghamton.

Mejia was the story of Game Two. The hard-throwing Dominican dominated the hapless Rock Cats from the get go, retiring the first eight hitters. Binghamton played flawless defense behind him and turned three double plays to erase baserunners.

The B-Mets once again jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first off former Mets’ farmhand Deolis Guerra. Satin reached with two outs in the frame on a passed ball after swinging at strike three. Ratliff made the Rock Cats pay for the catching flub with an RBI double to deep center. Mike Nickeas rounded out the inning’s scoring with a clean single to left, chasing home Ratliff.

Brahiam Maldonado squared up a payoff pitch from Guerra leading off the next inning for his 11th homer of the year, jumping the lead to 3-0.

Guerra exited due to injury in the fourth after allowing two runners to reach. Santos Arias spelled him and promptly gave up a bases-clearing triple to Coronado, running the lead to 5-0.

Binghamton put the final touches on another strong offensive performance with a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth. Satin led off the stanza with a double into the left-field corner. Ratliff and Campbell took care of the rest with run-scoring two-baggers, which pushed the lead up to 7-0.

Ratliff was a force in both games. The centerfielder was a combined 3-for-5 with two doubles, a homer and five RBI to pace the scoring attack in the double feature. In all, the B-Mets combined to score 15 runs on 22 hits over 12 innings at the plate.
